9mm brass

Has anyone else see 9mm brass with a thicker wall down inside the base? I pick up range brass to reload myself but dont want to trust this since it would take up case volume. Does anyone on here reload brass that looke like this or should i continue to toss it?

Unfortunately those are not rare. They are designed to prevent bullet set-back.

You have to screen your brass if it hits the floor at a range where any of this stuff is floating around.

You can reload it, but it doesn't mix with regular designs in terms of recipes. I give them to folks who have enough to make it worth their time to set up a specific recipe for them.

I've forgotten what the headstamp is on those, but I chunked them during sorting. They obviously are not really designed for reloading as we know it. Imagine an expander or a bullet hitting that ridge.

Toss it in the scrap bucket.

Lots of times the brass will break at the step leaving a brass ring in your chamber.

FM is Freedom Munitions. The stepped case brass is domestic.

There are 3 headstamps that are made on that tooling, IMT, FM, and AMMOLOAD. There used to be a lot more of this brass running around but I think those companies changed their tooling due at some point.

Maxxtech is another one to look out for. The step in the Maxxtech cases is even larger to an extent where internal volume is significantly altered.

You can reload the FM/IMT/AMMOLOAD but there is a risk of the front half of the case separating and remaining in the chamber. That step is basically a stress riser. My PCC will cut them in half every time.

You could theoretically work up a load for the Maxxtech case but I don't think it would be worth the effect.

I remove and scrap all 4 of these headstamps and would recommend the same to others.

I was always taught...If in doubt, throw it out. 9mm casings are plentiful
