9mm 115 HAP & N320

Hi Guys. I know this is mostly a rifle forum, but I figured I would try asking here.

I was gifted a quantity of N320 and 115g HAPs in 9mm. Im currently loading them at 4.1 grain @ 1.130"s. This combo delivers an avg of 950FPS out of my G19 clone. Watching the rounds weakly ejecting IMO we need to speed it up. The gun is on the ragged edge of cycling.

VV data shows a max charge of 4g @ 1.075"s delivering 1125FPS.

So Im wondering if anyone has experience with this combo?
My First instinct is to start creeping up the charge, looking for pressure signs. Im also loading long, so I wonder if my drop in speeds from that?
Anyways looking fwd to any insight you guys can provide.

Thanks!

950 is pretty low muzzle velocity for a 115 grain bullet. Your Glock 19 has a 4 inch barrel and most of the reloading manuals test with a 4 inch barrel for 9mm loads, so I am surprised your results are 200 fps short of the mark.

N320 is a very fast powder. I have used it with success with 65 grain frangibles. I don't think it is a very good match for 115 grain bullets.

I would work up slowly, .1 gr at a time while watching my speeds and pressure signs. Who knows what rifling type was used for the data. For whatever reason, you gun produces less pressure than the test gun. Possibly a powder lot issue also.

Im as suprised as you. I know Im loaded long, but 200FPS??!!??

It's not the perfect powder by far. However I want to try and make it work.

Why are you loading long?

I can understand maybe.010-.020".
But 0.055"??

In a rifle I regularly load longer than book.
I don't do it with pistol.

Try the book powder charge and the book COAL, and see if you get closer to the 1,100fps range.

Heck!
Your 950fps is what I'm shooting my 185gr 45ACP.

That's a great question. Ill answer that with a question. Why does VV suggest such a short COAL?

My only other 9, a shorter 43x would not feed JHP @ less than 1.130. (N340). So that's the COAL I chose.

So, sure Ill load some up @ the suggested 1.075 and give them a whirl. Ill be very supised if they jump to 1125 FPS. However like they say, you learn by doing..

With as small as the case volume is for 9mm, it only takes small changes in COAL and or powder charge to make a big difference.

I'll check my notes on the 115 HAP bullet. I know I am loading them slightly shorter than book for my daughter's Springfield XD9S.
But I kinda knew that was gonna happen, as my neighbors wife's XD9S took a shorter COAL also.

They were both shorter yet with a Sierra 115gr JHP.

But able to load slightly longer with Sierra's, Sig V-Crown.
Profile is different.

Found it.
I'm running 1.060" with the HAP and 4.9gr of Ramshot Silhouette.

Haven't chronoed it yet, but haven't had a failure to feed or failure to fire yet.
I've loaded up over 3,000 so far.
Works in their XDS and my Walther PPS, FN 509C, and my H&K VP9.

Wolff makes a wide assortment of recoil springs for a G19 for a reason. If you are oterwise satisfied with the load, get the right spring.

Recoil Springs - 19, 23, 32

For Use In:
Glock 19, 9mm
Glock 23, .40 S&W
Glock 32, .357 Sig
Please see ratings note below.

  • Reduced Power...: 14, 15, 16 & 17 Lb.
  • Factory Standard.: 18 Lb.
  • Extra Power........: 19, 20, 22 & 24 Lb.
So this got me thinking... and I dug around my pistol bag. You know under the old targets and spent brass that seems to find its way in here.

I need to see what spring is in that slide. Me thinks its reduced power already.

those glock barrels are busy inside I don't know what the rifling is called but I shoot standard looking barrels with groove and land, the standard glock barrel has wide looking lands, this is just what I see I really don't know what it's called...not much on pistols I do like to shoot mine, I finally could hit things with it so I call it a win.. I load titegroup and HS 6 and a few other powders some slow some fast with small rifle primers it has a healthy ejection they ding off the barn pretty hard

The rifling that Glock uses is called polygonal.
