$98 10/22 makeover. Amazing work!

Interesting article at the main site regarding a 10/22 makeover. This guys work is amazing!

Look up Joe Chacon and see what he can do with a 10-22. There are 10-22s that can shoot, however i doubt that the ones screaming about good their guns shoot actually have one.

Building an accurate 10/22 will cost the "Average guy" a LOT more than, $98.00 !
My Green Mtn Medium Sporter Barrel alone, cost,.. $130.00 + Shippng.
My 10-22 cost about, $850 total for, the orig. Rifle ( $250 ), Barrel, Volquartsen Target Trigger / Hammer ( set at 2.25 Pounds ), Volq. o/sized F-Pin, Extractor, Lil' Crow "recoil Lug', Power Custom L-H Safety, 2 Extra Mag's, glass bedding Kit, Scope ( 4.5 x 14 Burris, MOA, gridded ) and Mounts ! It's, easily, Sub 1/2 inch @ 50 yds with SK Match Extra and most, Mid $$$ range, Target ammo. It's NOT, a "Chacon', BUT, very, "close" !
And,. the Sage Rats are Terrified out to about, 85 yards with, Win or, CCI, HP's !
Lots of Hours involved for sure, but was, a Fun "Project" !

The 10-22 Ruger can be, a Fun Project but NOT,.. a Cheap one !
A couple of years ago, we had a big Post on. aftermarket Barrels and customizing, 10-22 Ruger's and WHAT we did, to make them shoot. There were, lots of good comments and idea's !

I see some wild claims about 10/22 accuracy, every one I have dealt with shaved lead like crazy, either the chamber or the bottom of the bolt damaging rounds in the magazine, eliminating those probs helps some, I have 2 friends who have Kidd rifles, set up with the best of everything.....the very best I ever seen one average at 50 was about .350" shooting 5 - 5 shot groups, not bad accuracy but not 1/2" at 100yds either. Custom BR builds do a bit better but not a lot.

Ruger 10/22s are great rifles and fun to shoot. You can pour $1000-1500 in custom parts and MAYBE you might have a competitive shooter. But If I want to be competitive on the range, it has to begin with a known quantitiy, ie: Vudoo, Anschutz, Martini, Rem 40X, Win 52 or a custom gun. I ghetto-ized a 10/22 with a Feddeersen barrel, BX trigger and Magpul stock for about $400. I wouldn't go any further. Semi-autos, for the most part, won't beat a bolt gun. I don't care who built it.

The tolerences on a semi-auto have to be loose enough for the gun to function with less energy available than with a bolt gun so the bolt gun wins on accuracy. However, one doesn't have to get out of position to work the bolt on a semi-auto like I have to do on a bolt gun so the semi-auto wins there. I've shot my best groups with a 10-22 modified trigger and green mt. bull barrel, closely followed by a stock cz 455 varmint. I've got maybe 750 in my 10-22 including a nikon scope and about the same in the cz.

Some Barrels, WILL shave Lead off the Bullet's Nose, UN-less you Radius the Face of the Barrel, a tiny bit at, the start of the Chamber's, Rim area. And, I use ONLY Ruger 10 Round Magazine's to avoid, the "Rocking" motion of, the 25 rounders that, usually, feed ammo, poorly.
I also, lightly Lapped my Green Mtn. Barrel and the Target Chamber at, the "Leade area" ( start of Rifling ) to allow me, to pull out, Live Rounds. Yup, she will only shoot, 5 shot group's, in the 3's and 4's at 50 yards, with medium priced, SK Std. plus, Pistol Match and Wolf Match Extra,.. NOT good enough for, Comp Targets !
The semi- custom, Ruger 10-22 that, I built, was designed for, Small Game like, Rabbits, Squirrels and Sage Rats, to 75- 85 ish yards and at, a mere, $850.00 it does that,.. "well".

Ahh yes THOSE guys.....I have a club full of them. I show up with my Anschutz or one of my match rifles and I hear "that's a funny looking ry-file,ya got there.......bet it won't out shoot my 10-22"
Well, many just don't like adjustable stocks, buttplates with hooks, slings and shooting jackets...

Danny, I don't think that is quite it, "competition shooting " is firing the shotgun at a 12 inch paper plate......yesterday, I was at the club, I over heard "I don't why we have targets at 300 yards, ain't no one ever gonna hit that" and I was told "I was smart, I would all the cops and turn my M1 Garand in, be cause it is illegal to own military guns"

Illegal to own vintage military firearms in Indiana? They have odd views of gun laws, especially coming from shooters.

Danny

Danny, the only rifles banned by Indiana law are an assault rifles defined as a rifle capable of full automatic fire. There are other rifles are banned but by federal law. I think what he is getting at is pistol shooters see no reason to shoot a rifle or shotgun, rifle shooters see no reason to shoot a shotgun or pistol, and Shotgun shooters see no reason to shoot a rifle or pistol.
There are varying degrees to which shooters adhere to each of the above.

I personally feel live and let live, whatever floats your boat, etc.

Back to the original post. I think the 10-22 in question is a beautiful piece of work and I respect the builder for the 1000 hrs of labor that he put into it.
