95g Berger VLD???

Will the 95g Berger VLD stablize in a 1/10" twist gun. does anyone have any experience on this. If not i'll find out this weekend.
thanks guys,
xdeano

Deano, try doing a search on this forum on the berger 95 vld. This has been discussed alot...You`ll get alot of responses...chris

Deano,

We recommend a 9" twist for the 95 gr VLD. This means that a 9" twist produces as close to a 1.5 stability factor as is possible or in other words is most stable. A bullet can be stable with a 1.1 stability factor which may be acheivable with a slower twist rate and the right velocity.

It is likely that more common cartridges like the 6BR or 243 Win cannot produce enough velocity to make the 95 gr VLD stable out of a 10" twist. If you are shooting a 6X284 or the like then it might work but barrel life will be short.

Regards,
Eric

how about the 90g hpbt match, they are rated for the 10" anyone have any experience with these? .398 bc isn't bad.

Deano,

Get a box and try them. Read our current Gun of the Week Article. Chuck G. is stabilizing the 95gr Berger just fine, at least out to 600 yards, using a moderate 6BR load in a 15", 10-twist barrel.

No guarantees, mind you, but you may find that they do work for you.

Bear in mind that the bullets continue to slow down the further out they get. So, a bullet that's stable at 500 may not necessarily remain so at 1000.

How far do you plan to shoot?

I'm getting a couple of dozen from a friend this weekend just to see if they'll stabilize. I'm still going to give them a try. I'll go read that article also. thanks

This gun will be my 600yd max gun. Anything further and i'll change into my match 308.

I'm one of those people that ask questions, but regardless of the great answers, I'm a biologist and science always wins. Gotta see it to believe it.

thanks again guys

xdeano,
I have a ARin 6mmBanshee thats pushing 95s to 2900+, it's also a 10 twist so If you don't mind let me know how they work.
I'm getting 1/2 groups with 80gr Noslers but the 95SMKs aren't doing so well.
thanks

alright I got a few bullets from a friend to load up. So this afternoon I went out and shot them. Here is what I've found.

243win
1/10" Twist
22" barrel
Fed 210M primers
Win brass
Varget
Berger 95g VLD

They stabilize at moderate and hot charges. At low charges they don't stabilize.

My charges:
32.5g Varget - unstable ~2800fps
33.0g Varget - stable ~2850fps
34.0g Varget - stable ~2925fps
34.2g Varget - stable ~2975fps
34.4g Varget - stable ~3000fps

Tests were held at 150yds.
I'm guessing anything at or around the 2900fps mark will do to stabilize these bullets.
I didn't push max. No primers showed signs of overpressure.

Just thought i'd share.
Thanks guys.

Dean

I went out this morning again to do some load workup, well it was less than successfully. Snow has a huge effect on these bullets for keeping them stable. From one half inch group at 150yds with different charges to unstable at 50yds. These bullets are right on the edge.
A sunny day bullet...

I was really surprised and disappointed. I'll have to do a few more test before I can call this bullet though.

Test loads were: 34.0g, 34.3g, 34.6g 34.8g and 35.0g Varget @ 2.700" OAL.

Just a note to anyone who has Bergers that do not work for them. We will exchange any Berger bullets for others that will work for you.

It does neither of us any good for you to have something that you can't use. If you need to swap bullets for others that will work contact me directly with your situation at eric.stecker@bergerbullets.com.

Regards,
Eric

Wow! you won't hear anyone else making that offer.
I don't like to shoot when it's 6 so I would say at 40+ degrees and 6000ft they should work. I have a 8.5 Krieger I've been wanting to chamber anyway.

Thanks Eric for the post. Now that's a great bullet company!!! I might take you up on that offer.

6 degrees is a warm day. :) I've shot some really nice groups when it was below 0F. More cloths, fewer heart beats to play with the weapon.

I found with a Rem. 700 factory rifle (9 1/8" twist ) the max practical bullet length is 1.1" and no BC higher than .430 ,,,,the 95 vld will deceive you into thinking that you gotta do some tuneing ,,,but it is the bullet not having enuff stability,,,,the Berger 95 vld is an excellent bullet ,,,but you gotta have enuff twist to make them work,,,Roger

Will the 95g Berger VLD stablize in a 1/10" twist gun. does anyone have any experience on this. If not i'll find out this weekend.
thanks guys,
xdeano
Probably not unless your elevation is above 6000'. Elevation Trump's all but barrel Twist
