9 twist for Berger 7mm 180 hybrid?

Texas

Silver $$ Contributor
Bergers website says I need an 8 twist for the 7mm 180 hybrid. I currently have a 9 twist. Anyone using a 9? I keep reading conflicting reports. The gun doesn't shoot very well so wondering if that's my issue. Seems like some people shoot them with the slower twist and still do well. Any advice would be appreciated.

I shoot them in a CBI 9 twist .284 with excellent results.

What are you shooting them in (cartridge and rifle)?

I'm shooting a 7/300 WSM. Remington 700 trued action with Brux 9 twist. What's your cartridge base to ogive dimension?

Texas,

I think you may have other issues. Try measuring the twist to make sure it is not mislabeled.

What do you consider "doesn't shoot very well"? That alone can be very subjective.

Did you just have the rifle built or buy it used?

Is the barrel clean?

A lot more details would help immensely.

I put a similar post up in the summer with the same rifle. It's built by a reputable smith who has built many guns for me and they all shoot very well. I'm looking to shoot under MOA out to 1,000 yards. Not half, but anything under 1 MOA. Barrel is around .700 at the muzzle and 28 inches long. Norma brass. Tried working up a load the way I always do and was getting bad results. Once in a while I'd get some decent groups (1.75-2inch) at 300 yards and then the next would go to over MOA. Tried the 180 hunting VLD, 180 hybrid, 175 ELD X, 168 Berger, and 162 ELD X. Nothing shot consistently well. I ended up putting a new Brux 9 twist on and also rechambered the old barrel. Will try new barrel soon but am wondering if an 8 twist would serve me better.
I've tried H1000, RL25 and Retumbo. What's the distance from your cartridge base to rifling? Maybe I need a new reamer too.

Something wrong with that barrel if you can't get anything to shoot. BTDT

All my rifles shooting Berger VLD Hunting are liking them between .005 and .010 off the lands.

The .284's shooting 180's and 168's are being pushed hard. The 708's shooting 140's are nice easy loads.

I shoot 2 7mm rem mags and reload for 4 more. they are all rem 700 26in barrels. they all love 180 bergers .010 off with h-1000 or retumbo. I had a good day this summer and was only shooter to hit 18in plate @ 1820 yds.

Texas,
FWIW, most of my FC shooting is done with a 7/270 WSM (same as 7/300WSM). I have always used a 1-9 twist. I shoot at elevations from 6500 feet down to 200 something. To ensure my loads are legal for the upcoming World Championships in Ottawa, Canada I shorten my Bartlein 5R barrels to 28” and reduced my load to 61.0 gr of H-4831sc. Please work up to this amount. This with a Berger 180 Hybrids in Norma cases w/Wolf primers. My chamber has a 0.200” lead. Velocity runs about 2950 fps. I fired the barrels and load in Ottawa and in Lodi, WI this year in rather chilly and wet conditions. I had no problem with the accuracy of the load.

Texas,
Our "OPTIMUM TWIST RATES" are based on a worst case scenario of 59 degrees at sea level. You can check what twist rate you need for the ALTITUDE(s) you will be shooting at on our TWIST RATE CALCULATOR :
