9 twist 22-250

I was wondering if anyone could give me some insight on a fast twist 22-250.. I have ran across a good buy on a bergara 22-250, it has a 24” 9 twist barrel from factory. I’m not looking to get into the heavy bullet game as this is gonna be a coyote/varmint rifle so I want fast/flat shooting... I understand guys that want to shoot heavy bullets out of them but 99% of my shots will be inside 350 yds so the need for heavy/long bullets isn’t there I don’t believe...

My question is have any of you had luck getting a 53-55 grain bullet to shoot in them? Also how much will the faster twist header velocity?

I had an 8 tw 22-250 specifically to shoot 80 gr Sierras at 600 yards. It was excellent. I tried lighter weight varmint bullets and some came apart before 100 yards! Target bullets of the same weight shot ok. Varmint bullets are fragile and tend not to like fast twist barrels...too many rpms.

If you want to shoot those light bullets, you will need a 1/12 or 1/14 twist.

I have a 9 twist .22-250AI. It shoots Nosler 55gr B-tips without any issues.
62gr Barnes make it a fine pig rifle, as well.

Sierra told me that their Blitzking line of 50 and 55 grain 224 bullets were rated for 4K fps in a 12 twist and that they should be limited to 3300 fps in 8 or 9 twist barrels to prevent blow ups.

My 14 twist 22-250 easily pushes 50 grain Varmint bullets past 3750 fps. I would plan on shooting 70 to 75 grain bullets in a 9 twist 22-250.

I don’t recall ever chronographing it, but if the books are to be believed, somewhere north of 3700 FPS.

For what it's worth, Nosler Ballistic Tips seem to be constructed a little tougher and they're generally a bullet that can survive, when other bullets can not. I shoot 53gr Vmax from my 223AI w/9tw and never had a single issue or failure, but a 22-250 is going to launch them a little faster too. Regardless, I'd still give the 53gr Vmax a try first followed by the 60gr Sierra TMK.

I've had good luck with the 69gr TMK in an 8 twist, actually just had it out this afternoon. 3200 fps with AR Comp, 1.25" 4 shot group at 200.

I've also had good luck with the 53gr Vmax in this rifle, but the 60gr was a bit more erratic. Always made it to the target, but didn't group great.

The Sierra 60gr TMK would be worth a look for a 9twist 22-250.

I ordered some 60 gr tmk, 53gr Vmax, 55 gn nosler ballistic tip varmint. Hopefully one of them will work

Shooting 55 SBKs in my 9 twist at 3700, very accurate to 200 yards. Have not had a chance yet to shoot longer distance to see if it holds up.

I had a Shilen 8" twist barrel in 22-250.

This barrel gave good accuracy with Sierra bullets-----52 SMK, 55 BK, 69 SMK, 77 SMK, 80 SMK.

I didn't try any more bullets and this was before the days of the Sierra TMK's.

Most of the use of this barrel was with the Sierra 80 SMK's and H4350. This barrel was toasted
very soon. The lighter bullets did well early on but the heavier bulletsd and slow powder took
their toll.

I'd suspect your success would be ruled by the luck of the draw on the rifle. The barrel might
last longer f you kept it out of the dog towns.

60 grain tipped matchking would work.
