9 mm Rifle for coon?

Thinking about buying/building a dedicated coon rifle. Leaning toward 22 mag or....what about these rifles that shoot 9 mm rounds? I know nothing about them. Farthest shot would be 50ish yards with most around the 20-30 yard mark. Don't care about pelt damage as there are no more fur buyers in our area. Any experience would be appreciated. Thanks in advance

A contender pistol would work or a lever gun in 38/357.

Otherwise, if you are set on 9mm then Ruger offer a really nice 9mm rifle called the PC Carbine, which is similar to a scaled up 10-22. S&W offer both an AR9 called the Response and also the FP Carbine (similar to the Rugar PC Carbine). Last but not least, Keltec offers an inexpensive 9mm survival rifle.

There are a number of companies offer an AR9.

A 17HMR or 22LR will do the job.... shot placement becomes important. Start taking head shots and these rimfires with be more than lethal.

I'd be more inclined to use something going faster with fragile varmint bullets for coon hunting. If I were to use 9mm, I'd use 124-147 gr JHP. Not sure how much they will open up on a thin cross section.

What's wrong with a 22RF?

I just bought a Bear Creek Arsenal BC-202, which is a clone of the 10/22 Magnum, in .22 WMR. Shoots about 1.5 inches at 100 yards with all 40 and 30 grain ammo tested. I would think that is all you need for racoons up to 125 yards or so.

All of the above should work for you. I shoot them mostly with 22 lr hollow point out of a scoped pistol. Either a semi auto or TC. both work for treed ones as well. 17 HMR is also a good choice.

I like a 22 Magnum chambered for 30g bullets for possums - I guess much the same size as a coon. I have seen one shot with a 30 carbine that took 5 shots to drop off a branch, likely through poor shot placement.

I like the 22 Magnum, Winchester 40g hp which gives good penetration through bones and fat.

Place your shot. A lot of 22 Mag ammo is not worth a darn on predators, just does not penetrate.

Concerning a 9mm, I would use 124 +|P to get the bullet to expand or the 115g +P, hand loads with Zero brand of jacket Hp would work well IF your rifle has the accuracy.

I would be careful about shooting coons out of trees, depending on where you are located as those bullets do come down.

Marlin 25M and Savage both make great bolt action 22 Magnums that are very accurate, just replace the spring in the trigger. I shoot a Ruger 77, 22 Mag bolt gun and have owned Browning A bolt and Mauser, also.

I'll do some research on this one

Only shot a few raccoons. All with 22 WMR and I was surprised how tough those critters are. They can soak up some lead and keep going.
Yea, they are tough. Shot one once out of a tree top while out grouse hunting. Always kept a couple slugs in my pocket for unexpected circumstances. First shot, the coon just flinched. Took a second to get it on the ground.
