9 grooves 284 diameter Barrel ... who knows ??? who ever tried ?

Hi guys,

I made a custom remington 700 maybe ten years ago and I only shoot it right now, in 7.08 Rem.

After cleaning the rifle, I watched into this barrel to see my work and i was a bit surprised by the number of grooves.

The number is 9 ..... the twist is also 9 maybe 9 1/2 .

I called the shooter who sold me the blank and he told me the maker was Ed Shilen ( but he's not 100% sure about hat) , SO ... i can't find any information about 9 grooves or even more than 6 or 4 ratchet .

I can count 9 tops of grooves that sure .

If you have any information about the maker it could be and how it should shot, don't hesitate to repost.

I have a bull barrel on a 38-55, like yours, but IIRC, its 12 groove. Shop I bought it from said it was a Shilen. I shoot cast boolits thru it and it is a shooter, even with the P-14 action military trigger.

1°) ...... No one else has some informations about 9 grooves rifling ?

2°) do you thing those type of barrels with a lot of grooves were made for cast bullet ?

Ed's regular line were 8 grooves.

I once owned a 8 groove 30 cal 1-15 T barrel. Shot like pooph. Re-chambered it, threaded the muzzle for a tuner and on and on. The best it would do is maybe 1/2 " center to center even after trying diff bullets, ladder testing, etc. Stick with a 4 to 6 groove. Admittedly not a large sample but enough for me to say no more 8 groove.
