9.3 X 57 Mauser

looking for 200 grain Bullets. Loads. And a FP GC mold source.
An extremely interesting caliber with great potential
Any experience and information is appreciated

Is the 9.3 Mauser in a 64 mm case, or are you looking at a wildcat?

It is the 8 X 57 mm Mauser case necked up to 9.3 mm
The caliber is German and was developed around 1900
Norma has loads for 250 and 280 grain Bullets.
I am looking for a 200 grain bullet at 2400 fps

It sounds like a good combination. I have always wanted a 358 Winchester, which sounds very similar. I will go look up the Norma load.

With a 0.366" bore and a 57 mm case rather than a 51 mm case the 9.3 x57 could have a slight advantage over the 358 Winchester.
Moose, elk, or mule deer probably won't notice any difference under 75 yards.
They probably won't notice a difference over 75 yards either

I'd run a 9.3x62 reamer in and have something that you can hunt pretty much anything in the world with. 286's at 2400 and 320's at 2100. It's a real killer.

The point is to get a 200 grain bullet.
the 9.3 x 57 will take any game in North America with a 200 grain bullet

Hawk Bullets manufactures a 200 grain round nose bullet for the 9.3x57 case:

We have a wide selection here for all the 9.3 rifles including weights commonly needed for the double barrel rifles. The doubles (9.3 x 74R) and the 9.3 x 57 cartridge, usually a Husqvarna rifle do better with the .030” jackets than the faster 9.3 x 62 or 9.3 x 64 cartridges:

50ct boxes @ $75.90

This Flat Base Raptor™ comes with tips already installed. Instead of mushrooming, these hollow points are designed so that after 1-2" of penetration, 6 blades break off and radiate outward in a start pattern while the base continues on for even deeper penetration.

I've owned and shot a lot of 9.3's. It's a great, versatile, and in this country underrated bore size. It's too good to limit yourself to just one bullet. Kinda like drinking one beer and never trying another..

There was a period of time quite a few years ago when the 9.3s once again became popular in this country. I worked on nearly every variation of factory cases as well as several wildcat versions necked to accept the .366" bullets. I still have 3 original boxes of the Kynoch loads for the 350 Rigby which is similar using the 225 grain bullets.

Anyway, I would cast the chamber in your rifle before attempting to load any bullet in this weight range. It's possible that the cup and core bullets in the 200 grain class will end up far short of the lands if seated correctly in the neck. This could result in less than stellar accuracy although it might be just the opposite. Cast the chamber first and make an educated decision.

Do you have a Canadian Distributor?

I didn't realize that you were out of this country...

Do you have a Canadian Distributor?

That portion of my post should have been in quotes since I am not affiliated with Hawk Bullets at all.

But using the link I supplied you can search the website and you will find:

"Shipping/Handling
SPECIAL RATE SHIPPING for postal addresses. We gladly use the flat rate Priority boxes and ship it to any US address. Many boxes of bullets can ship fast for very little. Three boxes of the smaller bullets can ship for just $7.50. A medium flat rate box is just $14.00 and holds up to 17 boxes. Customer savings have been substantial to say the least. E-mail us a list of the selection you desire and we will find the best rates available to you.

We only ship to US destinations."

I suggest calling them to see if they know of a method or distributor who could help you.

I believe Speer makes a 232 gr. if that is close enough. It is a spitzer (of a sort) but very short over all. I have shot it with my 9.3x62 and it was accurate enough to 200 yds. or so.

According to Quickload program...

49 to 50 gr of Varget will get you around 2,400 fps with a 200 grainer in the 9.3x57 Mauser cartridge.

That is interesting, of all the powders I have, Varget is not one of them.
I will have to get a pound after I find a source of bullets.
Thank you for this information it will be used in the near future.

Respectfully, Varget will also waste 15% of the load as you state, well, 12% but still a lot of powder just pushed out the front of the barrel without being used.

This is a harder cartridge/bullet combination to establish a fairly efficient load for. It really calls for a slightly faster powder to insure some degree of efficiency but then you inevitably surpass the suggested velocity goal of 2,400 fps.

I would suggest VVN-133 as nearly perfect or even AR-COMP in that same vein. IMR-3031 will also provide a decent balance between velocity and efficiency albeit a little faster than the OP suggested.

It's possible that by stepping up in bullet weight, your efficiency and velocity range will be more easily achieved. If not then the powders listed above should perform with satisfaction.

I do have a supply of IMR 3031 - thank you

Yeah your right. I just thought Varget is a very common powder and OP was asking for a range around 2,000 fps since he want's to shoot cast bullets.

With IMR-3031... I highlighted the column corresponding to 2,088 fps. at 38.4 gr imr3031.
But as you can see and as Kurz pointed out, the powder doesn't even reach 90% burn at such a low pressure level.

Ran the #'s with N-133 and it doesn't look a whole lot better than imr-3031.
For reduced loads I like using H-4895 (not imr-4895).
H-4895 even tho it doesn't make a complete burn in reduced loads, in my experience it still doesn't burn dirty at the lower chamber pressures. I did use magnum primers with H-4895 reduced loads to help with the burn.
