8x57 reloading

hello - new member here

Need some advice - got a Remington classic 8x57 and looking for quality brass for it

Any opinions I have taken a look at prvi - ready to pull the trigger on it (excuse the pun). Then I saw some Lapua on eBay for similar cost

Thoughts on which one to go with!
Thanks

I got some S&B headstamped 8X57 JRS, not sure if that's the same case. Their new all I did was pull the bullets and deprime them, Idahosharpshooter got the bullets. You can use them
you can have them, maybe 30 or 40 got to dig them out,,Capt.Dan

I use Winchester brass but will change to Lapua when they give up. I load Sierra 8mm 200gr. Matchkings/50-52 grs. Reloader 17/Wolf LR primers in a vintage Mauser sniper rifle I built. With a factory contoured barrel from Walther it shoots VERY well. A bit awkward with the period type scope mount and needed a trigger job (per period specs 3-4 Ibs.) but she does shoot.

JRS is the rimmed version. Should be pretty easy to tell. I use Federal brass, but as I bought 200 new and had 60 from 3, 20-count boxes of loaded ammo I wont be needing any more for a long long time. Lapua as mentioned and Norma make quality brass . . . . .

Side track and I asked this before but never got an answer. Maybe someone . .. . . . I found unfired pull down primed Federal brass at a very inexpensive cost. I thought pull down was military..... Federal ins't making military brass for anyone . .. . . What gives here ? The brass was 100% good, all 200 cases FWIW - thanks.

Good receipe

Go with Lapua if the price is even remotely similar. I have Prvi brass in 8x57 for use in my VZ24 and M48, and it is fine for general use, but not anywhere near the quality of Lapua. I also have been using Prvi bullets for 8x57 and am less impressed with their quality, especially IRT the variance on OAL of the bullets. These are FMJ's and they vary from .003" to .008" in length, which makes bullet seating a PITA. Prvi is OK if nothing else is available, but their QC is somewhat lacking.

If you want an super accurate load that is moderate on speed and pressure, here goes. Lapua brass or remington , i now use Lapua- 53.1 grains H4350 , fed. Lr mtch primer.- 175 sierra p h .or 180 nozler ballistic tip. They both shoot groups about 1/2"-3/4" at 100yds.20190405_214656.jpg

18 years ago I got a 1" 5 shot group at 100 meters with a surplus $50 1903 Turk Mauser with Win brass, 220 gr Sierra, and loaded as hot as the the brass could take with IMR4895.
That was with a 40X scope, no wind, a homemade trigger job, and glass bedded. I forged over the bolt handle. I went through a lot of rifles at BIG5 in the back room, to find one with shiney grooves. I think it had a broken magazine spring, so it had not been fired much since it got the 8mm barrel in the 1930s.

I bought a 1941 Yugoslavian that was sporterized just to get the stock and action. I bought a bandolier of surplus and found the rifle shot so well that I'd keep it.

As I use it as as a scout/hunting rifle great brass was not as issue. I bought several boxes of factory Winchester ammo and have been reloading them for years. It's not a bench rest rifle but with peep sights I have made 300 yard 1 shot kills. Not bad for $125.

In case you do not know. You can make 8x57 cases out of any 30-06 or similar case. Just trim it a bit shorter and run it through a full length 8x57 sizer then trim to proper length. Most of my 8x57 cases started out as Remington 30-06 or 270.

I have three rifles in full military dress. Two Yougo's that look like new and one Belgian. Did not give over $100 each for any of them but I have had them for a while. They all shoot great with the preferred loads. I load for my cousin that has a sported Spanish 98 Mauser and even through the bore looks like a 100 year old cabin chimney if you keep it clean it is a tack driver with Sierra 175s and IMR 4064.

Lapua is the safe choice.

I'd go with the PRVI if it's half the price. But if Lapua costs only 30 % more it's worth it.
