88 gr berger 6mm bullets on varmints

Anyone had experience with these on varmints? On Berger's web site it lists them as varmint hunting bullets.

Thanks
Stosh

I just came back from a prarie dog trip were I shot some 90 gr Bergers in 6br,also listed under the varmint section by Berger). I was not impressed. Vmaxes were WAY better. Of course they may work better on larger vamints like chucks or coyotes. They made small holes in the poodles & usually drug off.

I agree with Greg you can't find a better prairie dog bullet then V-max the splatter factor is much more defind then any of the other varmint bullets. My two 6BR's one a PacNor 28' 8tw the other a Hart 26" 12tw both love 75 grainers. My brother-in-law shoots V-max 87's in his 27" 9tw 6BR, I use the 87's in my 6mmAI for long work over 600yds. All these rifles will consistently shoot .2's and .3 at 100yds all day everyday. On a good day shooting off of a bench with my Sinclair windage B/R rest my 12tw will shoot the 75's even better into the .1's. Being I'm not into competitive shooting and just enjoy busting PD's, reloading and punching a few targets with accurate rifles, I've no need for anything better. Here's my pet 6BR load, hope you find it useful.

Big Diff. between a praire Dog & a Ground Hog....I'd expect the lightest bullets to do best on those thin targets..That said I've switched to the 88 gr berger FB Match bullet in a 243 winchester for use on groundhogs..I used to use the 87 gr V-max & did some fancy long range shooting with it...But the 88 gr Berger Bullet totally outclasses the 87 gr V-max in the accuracy dept at any range..At least in my guns...I've got a pile of 75 gr V-max bullets that shoot great @ 100 yds.. It just wont cut it at longer distances..it might be me.. but I've let good shooters try that gun & load combo at both distances & it was the same for all of us..100 yds all touching..200 yds "shotgun" pattern to about 2.5 to 3.5 inch groups...mike in ct

Well Guys,
Just got home from a trip to NY and shot 9 Groundhogs with the new 6x47L With 88 gr Berger FB HP.

Longest shot was 300yds but none of them moved after they were hit, was very quick. I am a little nervouose about using them on P.D.s but they worked great on G-Hogs.

I was more careful to make sure I had a good backstop as all of these bullets exited the Hog. I sure with they would put a Balistic Tip on these things!!

Stoch,

the 88grn VLD's will work very well from 400 out to 1000 yards, but I think the closer in shots, 0 to 300 yards, the bullet will go right through them. However, I think you will be just fine either way.

By the way, your rifle looks great!!!!! I am still going back in forth between the 6BR and the 6x47 Lapua. Anyhow, your rifle looks great. I am looking forward to hearing how she does on your Pdog trip. I bet your going to be able to really stretch her out on that trip.

6BR
I wrestled with that decision for a long time and I finally decided on the 6x47 as you know. I wanted the extra velocity and I believe it is just as accurate as the BR. But you will have to make the decision for yourself. I think either one would be great! Thanks, the gunsmith, Dave Bruno, gets all the credit, I just had to pay for it :)

I think the 6x47 would have an advantage over the BR out past 400 yds, just because of the velocity difference, having said that the BR would do great also.
