87gr V Max in 12" twist

Try giving birdog a PM and ask him your question,he may be able answer you...

This is as good a place for your question as any, someone will be along to give you an answer to your query.

Water, this evening (thx to this thread) I tried some 87gr. berger VLD's through my 12twist dasher. I only tried two loads, both at 32.5gr. varget and the jammed load did a .39 but vertical and the .010 off jam gave me a .11. I'll try it some more, this was just playing around with my varmint barrel but it show promise with the 87 grainers. I'll let you know if they work out to 300 in about a week.

Potatoe, I think it has been proven the 87's will shoot well from a 12twist Dasher. What I want to know is if the 150 fps slower of the standard BR will make a difference or not at long range.

I did look, and they look great. But they are out of a dasher. I'm talking about a standard 6BR.

Just as a comparison, I've got a 12 twist 6ppc that I loaded up a dozen of the 87grain Vmax's just for the heck of it...... it grouped pretty darned well at 450yds. They were still stabilized at that distance. So I'm pretty sure that the 6br would be good to at least 600 if your barrel is long enough to squeeze enough muzzle velocity in to it.

Seems to me that ole birdog tried some out to quite a bit farther than that out of a ppc. with good results. WD

Thanks WyleWD, that certainly tells me something. Do you recall what your muzzle velocity was? I know birddog shot some with a dasher 12 twist but didn't know did with a ppc.

It may have been birddog that gave me the idea to try it during a phone conversation once. I didn't even bother to check the MV I don't think...... but you can bet that it was substantially lower than what a br is capable of as I only had a 26" barrel. ;) WD

PS... I stand corrected... my brother actually shot a small match using them in his ppc which is identical to mine.... we didn't have any other bullets to use so since they shot pretty well he used the 87gr Vmax..... best we can recall they were just a tad under 2800fps.

I have an 8 twist barrel, and have a couple of boxes of Hornady 87gr VMax. I intended to load these with Varget and CCI 450's. Does anyone have a recommendation on powder weight and distance to lands to use?

i won the first 1000 yard match i shot in. mixture of 88 berger and 87 horn bthp and I 4064 out of a 12 twist 243. since then i have shot vax too. no problem

I know they are fine at Dasher or .243 velocity. I'm talking about standard BR velocity. Wish I had a 1000 yard range to find out for myself.

I shoot 87 vmax's in my standard 6 br out to 600 yds with great success.I use vv135 ,can't remember how much.Varget works well also .

In May my Son and I shot our 6br's at over 1000 yds. His is a Crit. 26 inch and mine is a 28 inch McGowen. He shoots 87 Vmax and I shoot 87 gr. BTHP Hornadys. They both did good, but his seemed to hold up better than mine, by that I mean we both had the same scope setup and other than bullets used the same loads. At 1000 yds. he still had 1/2 turn on his elev. and mine was out and I had to hold over.
