87 Vmax for Pdogs Opinions Wanted (and go!!!)

Urban, the 87's may get you re thinking your mind set. My 6 BRX 10T with H4895 shoots tiny bug holes with the 87's.

The mind has to be like a Parachute to work properly, OPEN! Try some different bullets from time to time, 75g V max in the 6 XC, 87g V max, and I hope you can experience the 58g V max in a zero to .020 freebore 6 XC...glory....

My freebore is .030 and those 87's are whistling Dixie! Nothing to fix on this barrel, boring. Went to two Dashers...one makes me want to bang my head on the wall.
You're running .030 freebore with the 87 Vmax? I'd imagine the BT/BS juncture would be seated well past/deeper than the base of the neck...given shorter neck of BRX? That said, the .030 would surely be ideal if one wanted ability to use 58s too...I'd think.

I'm likely going full length neck (BRA), and thinking I'd like like the BS/BT juncture of 87 vmax to be seated about 2/3rds the way down neck and thus, something like .070 would fit that bill if my logic is correct.

I have some 50 fb 6xc Remage in stock.

Your thinking is correct in the geometry of the 87 and my .030 freebore, but the accuracy is incredible. If the accuracy was not a small bug hole, I would use my uni-throater and seat the bullet further out! The talking heads tout the issue of the bullet shank being above the shoulder neck junction to avoid the issue of monitoring for doughnuts that can form. As long as the bullet does not impede the amount of powder that you can use, I have found exceptional accuracy in many cartridge/bullet combo's with short freebore, but there are exceptions.

So, you cut a reamer for the 87 to be seated at the intersection of the neck and Shoulder, you just screwed yourself real good for 55-75g bullets, not to mention how much you have shortened your barrel life.

We also shot the 87's in 243 Win chambers with zero freebore with incredible accuracy, R#19 and IMR 4831 with Fed 215's.

I could go on and on, but then again, I am not a politically correct kind of guy.

If I did not have a lathe, I would be buying Brad's barrels by the dozen for varmints, best deal on the Planet!

In my 6XC years.......8 twist

87 V's would not twist off the jackets

but 75 V's would....

Food for thought

I shoot 87vmax's in a 6mm rem ackley, (not a br) 10t hv kreiger barrel. 3650 fps, it's my rockchuck gun. my friend shoots 88 berger varmint out of a 6-284 and I believe my hits are more spectacular. but he might disagree.

I ran both the 87 and 75gr V-Max last season out of my older 1-8" 6XC match rifles for prairie dogs, albeit at moderate velocities. Both worked well and were spectacular on impact. Much better than the 88gr Bergers.

Read the articles by and about Richard Franklin on this site. He a shot 6mmRem.A.I. I had one of his rifles, 40X, heavy (15 lbs), it shot bug holes ( 5/.156) with the information from the previous owner. Mr. Franklin shot ground hogs at just over 1000yds with his 6mmRem.A.I,

I have lots of barrels I can shoot in 6mm now :)

I normally shoot the 85 Sierra HP, but I figure those are gone for a while. So, I bought some 87 Vmax. I have never been a Hornady bullets fan I admit. I do know they blow up really well.

Opinions?
Yesterday I tried a new load in my 6X47 Lapua with Hornady 87 Vmax over IMR4350 at a small prairie dog town. At 300 yards they were accurate and effective. At 100 to 200 they were explosive on impact.

The 87s never grouped well in my 243, 6x45, 6x6.8, 1/9, 1/10 twist barrels.
Held about .900"+ and always had flyers.
Others like them, I dont use them any longer. They can be found a lot easier than other weights which is a plus if your rig likes them though.

Doing load work for my 6 ARC I went from .005 to .035 and .035 was by far the best group, but I need to work with more jump and see how far it wants to jump.
I measured 3.065 to the lands in this rifle with a Sinclair tool, and it was the best group. The rifle does better with 105 Precision Ballistics VLDs.
