87 Vmax for Pdogs Opinions Wanted (and go!!!)

My go to bullet in a 6BR for the longer range dogs. 3150 is about as fast as I can push it with Varget. Crazy accurate...very explosive on the target.
I use the 87 Vax in my 6BR with Varget as well. I use a 10 twist. The results on prairie dogs is impressive. Maximum range for me is 400 yards, at least so far. I plan to try 75 Vmax when I find time.

I weigh 245 lbs, my rifle is 13+ lbs, I shoot the 55's in my 12 twist 6BR. That said the recoil from that setup allows me to see the shot and flip 99% of the time in a PDog shot. Careful when your shooting those heavy bullets as you might miss the show because of recoil in your scope! PDog shooting is a spectator sport .

I’ve shot the 87 Vmax in a 30” 10tw 243, and in a 6-284 9tw (30”). Major damage on pd’s to 900 or so and a few gh’s out to 800ish. They worked very well.

87 Vmax and IMR 4064 is my very favorite 243 recipe for factory barrels. Got the recipe in this site in the 243 cartridge guide page. Try it in your 6xc, you won’t regret it!

Indeed!
Decided after my last poodle shoot to ditch my 6. Tried switching from 87 grainers to 75’s but muzzle flip is still too much. And this is in a 18 pound gun. The replacement will be a 20 Dasher with 55 grain Bergers.

I will buy your 87s hahaha

hfinkle is not exaggerating.

Voldoc, the Dentist written up here w a 20 cal pd kill over 1k or wassit 110? A half dozen yrs back +/- loved those 87s for flying lessons and forensic prep. No scalpel or saw needed for dissection. Swore by them.

300 to 400 yds

I shoot the 87 out of two 6MM's. Both have 8 twist barrels. One is a H.S. Precision 2000 SA 243 AI with a Kreiger, the other a 700 6x47 with a Ratchet Twist Shilen.

Both work very well on Rockchucks and P-Dogs. With 105 grain bullets they are also fantastic 1300 yard steel ringers!

For the 87s, what range of Freebore is recommended? I'd think anything from .030 - .080 would be adequate, with something right in the .050 being ideal?
