87 vmax/105 Amax

I have a very accurate 87 vmax coyote load worked up for my 6 dasher 8 twist that shoots real good out to 500 yards but i haven't tried them on paper any further as of yet. I have a good stockpile of 105 amax and was looking for some advice on if it would be worth it to try and develop a load with them instead of the 87 vmax for coyotes that like to hang way out there and won't come in to the call which seems to be the norm. My area typically is long shots and usually windy. I guess im asking will it be big gains out further with the 105 Amax?

I prefer the 105 amax over the 87 vmax for coyotes. Both anchor them well but I found that beyond 300 yards the 105 amax gets the nod. 32.5 gr Varget gets me 2950 FPS with a 22” suppressed 7.75” twist.

Only downside i guess is once i burn through the thousand 105's that i have then that's all she wrote. No longer available. That is a pile of coyotes though....

Gotta use them for something, coyotes are a good cause. After that switch to 108 ELDm and it will still work for yotes

What is your load?

I'll swap you a couple boxes of the 105's you got for a couple 87's in return....I never could get the lighter ones to shoot as well as I'd have liked in my 6xc....but the 105's are the dog's danglies in both my 6xc's.

I hunt varmint contests more than anyone should. I don't recall ever noticing a coyote beyond 300 yards in my part of the world. Hunted them since the 80's when we had a state bounty on them. If you see them that far out use the 105's, but I believe the 87's will do you just fine.

Compare the two loads in a ballistic program.
Set range interval to 100 and wind 90 degrees/2mph.

This is a typical windcall error and the numbers will show if there will be any significant difference. I suspect that at 400 possibly 500 you'll find them very similar.

I used 87 Vmax when my 243 had 1:10". I now use 105 Amax in a 1:8". Can't really tell the difference as both bullets reliably kill what I have been shooting.

I gave up Varget long ago and far away as I've stated before and I've never missed it. So when you get tired of running out of Varget you should take a look at:

IMR-4064
IMR-4895
IMR-4320
Norma 203B
VVN-140/N-540

I used both the 87gr and the 105s which I've also mentioned before. My supply of the 105s is finite since Hornady gave us the pretender as a substitute. But it has the ability to perform admirably at the longer ranges whereas the 87 might suffer somewhat from wind. Coyote are not particularly sturdy in construction so even the lighter bullets show excellent performance at the closer ranges. ;)

No matter the choice of powder or bullet, enjoy the experience of being outdoors and shooting!:D

I punched in some rough data into JBM ballistics for the 105's and just used 2950 for velocity and 2 mph wind and out to 700 yards there is hardly any difference in wind drift. My 87 vmax load is 3296 fps.

I have extensively used both but in .243W & 6mm AI. Not much difference in the two for field shooting at rodents. My standard 6mm Rem & .243W are 8 twist and shoot 87Vmax's very well and a variety of 105's. My re-barreled 6mm AI from a 8 twist to a 10 twist is only used with 87 Vmax's and provides more excitement way out there.
