87 Grain Vmax 1-12" 6BR

Has anybody tried the 87 Vmax in a 1-12" 6BR? My rifle shoots the 80 grain Berger very well, but don't know if the 1-12" will be fast enough for the Hornady, due to the Vmax being .120" longer.

I never actually tried it, but a while back I asked the same question and was told on here and other sites that 80gr was close to the limit with a 12 twist.

Some people have had them stabilize, but most didnt.

Hope this helps

I tried and failed in two 12 twist barrels.
75gr yes, 80 gr flat based yes, even the 85Gr nosler partition and 100gr round nose hornady but the 75gr vmax is about the best BC I could shoot in 12 twist.

87 Vmax is too long of a bullet and requires a faster twist like 1:8.... I shot them in a 1:10 and they do ok.

I should have got a 1:8 instead of 1:12 and used a 87 vmax.

I shoot a 6mm Rem 700 with a PacNor 3 grove 1x10" twist.

Monday, I shot a 3/8" group at 3320fps at 100 yards with the 87 Hornady V-Max. I have about 700 rds down the barrel. It is very accurate and terrifies all the prairie dogs in Albany, Co. WY. I am using Rem cases with the necks turned to .013, PP trued, flash hole reamed, and 35.5 gr of IMR 4064. Hope to kill my 1000+ prairie dog this June.

I was shooting 80 gr Nosler bal tip a couple of years ago on 1000 yard steel targets. I hit the 800 yard 1" of angle (8") fine, but my bullets went transonic at 900 and 1000yds.

The 87Gr Hornady V-Max stay supersonic out past 1000"yards. Old Doug

The higher BC is what I'm after. When I built this rifle I assumed that it would be best at short range 300-400 or less. After shooting a chuck at 523 yards a couple of days ago and several at over 450, I feel that I under estimated it's capability. I chose the 1-12" with the intent of shooting the 75 grain Vmax. The rifle is a Savage LRPV with a Bartlein 5R barrel that I chambered myself. Thanks to all that took time to respond, looks like I need a 1-8" barrel.

Looks like it is conditionally stable at 2800fps & 1:10 and should be stable in most atmospheric conditions at 1:9.125

87gr vmax
sg m t d l twist
0.8703 87 49.3827 0.243 4.3333 12

87gr vmax
sg m t d l twist
1.2532 87 41.1523 0.243 4.3333 10

87gr vmax
sg m t d l twist
1.5051 87 37.5514 0.243 4.3333 9.125

sg = stability factor
m = mass in grains
t = twist rate incailbers per turn
d = caliber in inches
l = length in calibers

sg=30m/t^2d^3l(1+l^2)

I shot 95 grain Sierra MKs in a 9" 6mm Remington, grouping very well at 300. That was a cut-rifled H-S Precision barrel and was likely a true 9" twist. It shot everything from 58 V-Max to the Sierras very well. It has been replaced by an 8" twist Krieger that is not back yet from Stan Ware. That twist might be too much for the 55-75 grain bullets at 6mm velocities. I really liked the 58 V-Max at 4050 and may end up going back to a 9".

If you do not want to shoot heavy bullets, a 9-10" twist is probably the best compromise.

My standard Rem. 700 VLS 1-9.25" twist barrel still shoots the 87gr. V-MAX like a house-a-fire out to 600........so thanks for putting it on paper that you don't need a 1-8" barrel to shoot 87gr's......
