87 Grain V-Max Barrel Twist

What barrel twist should i use for 87 grain V-Max in 6mm Remington ackley? Sending my rifle to Gre-Tan in the morning and i got to order a barrel soon.
Thanks

1-12" will stabilize that bullet at typical 6mm Rem AI velocities. You certainly can choose a tighter twist if you want, but expect a minor decrease in velocity with the faster twist, although not significant by most measures).

I freind of mine has a 243AI 12 twist it will not shoot, Go with a 10, it will shoot every thing but a 105 & 107.

A good friend and fellow prairie dog shooter built a 6XC last year. The only bullet he intended to use was the 87gr V-Max and so he contacted Hornady for twist rate suggestions. Hornady said that 1-12" will reliably stabilize that particular bullet. He went with 1-12" and it shoots great. I later built a 6mm-250 Ackley, again, with 87gr V-Max bullets in mind. I went with 1-11" and it works wonderfully. Both of these guns produce lower velocities than the cartridge you plan to use.

Long/Short: According to Hornady, and my personal experience) a 1-12" twist will stabilize a 87gr V-Maxat velocities over 3000 FPS. But if you're worried about it, go with a 1-10". Personally, I'm a hotrodder and prefer to squeeze every last bit of velocity I can with a given combo - that's why I don't use more twist than necessary.

I shot a factory Savage 12 BVSS in 243win with a 1 9 1/4 twist, I shot the 87grain V-Max and I like them. I am pushing them at 3350 with Ram Shot Hunter with Mag primers. They shot really well up to 600 yards. I shot 10 rounds up to 1000 yards once, and it shot good, but to light of a bullet to kill a big game. I think for paper shooting they works well, especially if you can increase your velocity. The best of luck with your load and keep us posted with your results.

I'am planning on shooting deer with this 6mm Remington Ackley.I ordered a Krieger 1in10 twist and its going to be 26" long.I also have been looking at the Hornady 85 grain interbond.I have shot deer with a 22-250 6 or 7 times in the past with a 55 grain bullet.I know the 87 grain v max will do the job but iam looking into a long range thing here. The most would be 500 yards. The interbond should work better than the v max.I here that the 1 in 10 twist some times wont shoot 85 grain bullets.A box of these babies are $35 a box.Iam going to order 2 boxes.I hope it will shoot them find:)

I have a .243 A.I. with a 1-10" twist that will punch 5 shot one hole groups @200 meters with 87 grn. V-Maxes topped with a healthy dose of H4831. Previous to this bullet, I was shooting 80 grn. Berger MEF's that I thought were hot but the 87 grn. V-Maxes have a better BC and more weight. I didn't start shooting the V-Maxes until I had approx. 1500 rds. in a very fire cracked bore. Amazingly, this barrel has not yet given up the ghost. I have a new 1-10" that I will screw on when the old one dies and I will start with 87 grn. V-Maxes right off the bat.
