Is there any advanadge in a 85 short 6br, in a 1-14 twist tube using 68gr pills, over a full lenght 6br. I have a used hart tube chambered in 6ppc that i picked up cheap it shoots great but has a scracthed up chamber from a stuck case.I know it would be easy to cut a new full lenght 6br chamber in it.Its for praire dogs.If cut with a lapua reamer will it be ok to shoot all this remington brass i have,I know lapua is bigger, and you cant shoot it in a rem chamber. Are any of the dies sold now fit the larger lapua brass.also the barrel is only 21'long if that makes any difference. Thanks

All the dies I know of,Forster, Wilson, Redding, Hornady, RCBS), fit the Lapua 6BR brass just fine--though the decapping pin will be oversize with the RCBS,and maybe the Hornady). The correct pin diam, if you DON'T want to ream flash-holes, is under 0.59.

You asked--"is it OK to shoot the Remington brass". Presume you mean Remington 6BR brass. Probably, but need to know your shoulder and web diameter right above the extractor groove. Depending on the reamer used to cut a 6BR chamber, you may have a little more clearance than is optimal.

In your case, if the gun shoots well, maybe just leave it a 6PPC. If I was to redo the chamber, I would ream it to a full 6BR, .271 or .272 neck. The difference in accuracy between a short BR and a std isn't worth the trouble of pushing the shoulder back.

21" is pretty short, but the gun should still shoot well with the small pills. What I might do is just have a smith open up the neck so you can shoot unturned 6PPC brass,i.e. 220 Russian fire-formed to 6PPC, or the promised Lapua 6PPC brass to be imported by Dakota).

Stick the 6mmBR reamer in to gain a fresh throat and if you already have Rem BR cases you can use them safely but dont load them as hot as a Lapua case because you will open the primer poskets quickley. Have the reamer cut to suit Lapua cases so when the Rem cases are dead you can use Lapua also the dies will fit the chamber. It is like using Win 308 brass in a conventional chamber safe but the cases are made on the small size of SAAMI specifications their will be a bulge just above the web where the case expands to fit the chamber but when you resize it will stay there and stabalise. Dont shorten it as you will have to modify dies and the ballistics will be back to PPC so you may as well have stayed there reaming the neck. I have a 22" BR for hunting and its awsome use Benchmark, H4895 or Varget they all work verry well down to 55gr Bullets and up to the heaviest you can stabalise. I also use Rem 7 1/2 primers as they are harder to blow if you dont have a bushed firing pin.
