80gr 223 h335?

Thinking about a shorter 223 bolt action suppressed varmint/predator/truck rifle. I have a couple kegs of h335 I'd like to use. I'd like to shoot 60gr to 80gr.

Curious what the shortest length barrel that could get 2800fps with an 80gr with h335 in 223?

That's part of the question I guess.

Was thinking a Wylde chamber which has a .062 freebore I believe.... Possibly a 223AI with the same freebore. 7 twist

I'd probably do an OCW style test with my Chrono running. Book Max -10% and head up 1% at a time.

80 @ 2800 is probably optimistic with a 223 sized case, in ideally an 18-20".

I have a 22 creed barrel on order and plan on using 80 to 90 class bullets in that. Would be handy to have a couple thousand bullets I could use in both.

Keep us posted on the outcome

Your worried about the rifle weighing 1 more pound?

I've run the 80.5 Fullbores at ~2850 fps from a 26" barreled bolt rifle that had zero freebore, meaning the bullets were sunk quite deep in the case. I used H322 powder to achieve this, which has really tiny kernels and is much faster burning than I might normally choose for a bullet weight that heavy. I suspect you might be able to hit 2800 fps from a 24", or possibly even 22" barrel, as long as the rifle had sufficient freebore (i.e. more than zero, which is what mine had), and either a double-base or relatively high-energy single-base powder. However, taking advantage of a freebore optimized for bullets of that length might make feeding from a standard magazine problematic, so a longer mag system capable of handling longer loaded rounds might be necessary.

One alternative that might be worth consideration would be switching to a slightly lighter bullet such as the Hornady 75 ELDM. I've had excellent results with the 75 ELDMs in terms of precision target shooting; they have a very high BC for their weight and driving them into the 2800 fps realm from a shorter barrel would likely be much less of an issue (i.e. pressure/brass life/loading to mag length) than with an 80 gr bullet.

16" barrel with some 60 gr bullets will get you 2,800 - 2,900 fps
I'm thinking specifically with the 60 gr Sierra HP # 1375 @ 2.260" COAL.

With the 80 gr A-max @ 2.260" COAL you'll need a 24" stick to reach the 2,800 fps.

5.56x45 chamber might need a bit more H-335 to make the mark. Maybe like 0.5 to 1 gr extra.

Best compromise would be the 75 gr Hornady HPBT.... It's a bullet that shoots great loaded at SAAMI 2.260" COAL and it's very accurate. I get just short of 2,800 fps from a 20" with the 75 gr Hornady BTHP ( # 2279 ) & H-335

my Sierra manual shows a max load of 25.8 grains of H335 to get 2900 fps out of a 24 inch barrel with 80 grain SMK. So, I'd say you need a 22 inch barrel minimum if you want to get to that 2800 fps velocity..

I would start at 24 inches. 2800 with an 80 out of a 223 is pretty quick. 20 inches at the shortest. Wylde chamber is fine for what you are trying to do.
My 20" Wylde .223 with 68 Hornaday bthp and Nosler 70 RDF is definitely a good shooter for a truck rifle..2.260 mag length ammo.
