80 grn A-Max ?

Does anyone have any experience with these? If so, how do they shoot? What loads and twist rate are you using?

Thanks,
Kevin

I've got less than 100 80gr A-Max though my 1:7 22" 223AI, but I'm seeing 2890fps with Varget and 5-shot groups running between 0.25-0.50 MOA at 300yd (as far as I've shot groups).

To be fair, I'm very likely the limiting factor in accuracy, not the rifle or the bullet.

I run 80 gr AMax in a 222 Magnum AI (I just pushed the 223 AI reamer a little deeper). I use 204 Ruger brass necked up.

80 gr Amax will make a believer out of you with long, thin bullets with high BC...they fly VERY well.

I use a Shilen Select Match stainless 1:8 in the light varmint contour. Recoil is non existent.

in my service rifle, 24 gr of TAC with 7 thou jam, wcc brass with WW primers was my 600 yard load. good little bullet. my gun preferred them over the 75amax. 1:7.75 twist merchant bbl.
cheers,
doc

26" 8tw Criterion chambered in .223AI screwed on a Savage 12 action. Lapua case, BR-4 primer, bunch of Varget behind the jammed 80 gr. A-Max gets me 3050 fps. Very accurate long range setup. Just shot a smallish NC Whitetail at 30 yards with a quartering shoulder shot and this load. Deer went <35 yds. however I lost the entrance shoulder. Bullet almost exited so be careful of your back drop when using this for Varmints. I also prefer this bullet to their 75 grain.

I'm running the 80 out of this oddball Savage Super Striker 22-250, 8T McGowen @ 2850 using old IMR 4350. Actually won the www.moaguns.com field shoot this year with this setup--

Mind if I ask how much Varget?

For comparison's sake, my 22" 1:7 Criterion 223AI load is 26.2gr Varget, 80gr Amax @ 2.465" OAL, Nosler case, CCI-450...2890fps.

Yes I would call that "Boiler Up"

26 1/2, please be careful. ;)

Always!

26.4gr gave me 2936fps and excellent accuracy, but showed slight ejector marks on the Nosler brass so I backed the load back down to 26.2gr and so far its worked well.

I'm still very new to the 223AI so just trying to benchmark where I am...
