8 twist proof research barrel, good starting load?? 223 rem

Just got a 8 twist proof barrel, it’s set up on a Curtis axiom, super light 22” in a AG composite stock.chambered in 223 I been playing with the stuff I already loaded which was full throttle 52-55gr stuff worked up for a factory Remington 12 twist.

the 55 stuff doesn’t shoot very good at all which is about what I expected.

I have some 70-80 grain Bullets and some 748 powder and reloader 15 and Varget, and some benchmark.

ive loaded some 75 grain Berger vld’s at about 24 grains of RL15 and this looks like it might be close..

Anyone have any suggestions, I’m also considering ordering like a thousand Bullets like in the 75-77 grain range I’d like to hear suggestions there to.. looking at Lapua sceanar, and the 77smk and the 75 vld

I'd suggest a non vld bullet - they are easier to find the right seating depth.

For 1:8, Berger 73's, 77's or Full Bore 80.5 should all be shooters. Sierra 69 smk or tmk, 77 smk or tmk or 80 smk should work well also.

50 to 55 grain bullets will shoot wonderfully out of most 1-8" twist barrels but you need to change out the powder to one your new tube likes and run a ladder test using the bullets you want to use. My 1-8" loves CFE223 with 55's. It will even shoot crappy 55 FMJ's good with that powder. Also try IMR8208XBR, TAC, Varget or Accurate RL7. These usually shoot good to excellent.

Try a Sierra 69 TMK over your powder of choice, you will be well pleased (W-748 is a great place to start and may not need to experiement any further)
CFE-223 is also great.
BTW (the 77 TMK's are kind of neat but I got way better consistency with the 69 TMK since the 77 TMK Ogive is supposedly different to make a Heavy but that will load to mag length.
Notice the 69 TMK BC holds really well between the 2700 and 1950 fps range.
I built a 22-250 10 Twist and use the 69's....bugholes
An AR-15 with a 9 Twist.......................................10 shot bugholes
In a 220Swift A.I. 8 Twist...................................... Bugholes (.200's or less)
This is one of Sierra's best bullets in .22 cal that I've experienced. Mainly no flyers ever

I have several pounds of 748, in my last 223 it shot pretty tiny with the flat bottom hp match king I think they are 53 grains, that was in a 12 twist.

thanks, I might have to give that a whirl.

That W-748 powder can be just the ticket with lighter bullets as well. One of my most accurate .223's shoots 40 grain V-Maxes and Hornady 40 NTX lead free with that powder. Tiny, bitty groups. That is in a 1-9 twist, though I'd not hesitate to try it in a 1-8". I always try to select the lighter bullet to do a job if that is all that is needed. less recoil to rock one off the sight picture - cheaper bullets and I believe longer barrel life. That W748 powder refers to the degrees at which it burns - and is supposedly a low temperature powder. I have been shooting one tube since new exclusively with 40-grain bullets and W-748 just to see how long it will accurately shoot. Some of my other tubes don't care much for it - which is typical.

To ta6ppc,
Graf’s has .223 Norma brass on sale @ 33$ per 100 best cheap price out there if you are looking. Max of 300 per order.

All the powders you have will work fine.

I must be pushing mine to hard. 1-7 will eat any jacketed 40 grain I have tried, some 50’s as well. I had a 1-8 rifle that was no better. I have a couple of 1-9’s, the get along with 40 grain bullets most of the time, border line RPM, 50’s are fine.
I am now playing with a 1-7 it really likes the 69MK, the 60 grain Vmax is working well also.

Try the Barnes Varmint Grenades. In my experience - you can push them as fast as you can get it to shoot. The 50's rule.

Berger 70 VLD's, N133 powder, will shoot lights out and provide very low extreme spread.
Berger 75 VLD's, N133 powder, will shoot lights out and provide very low extreme spread.
Sierra 69 MK's, N133 powder, will shoot lights out and provide very low extreme spread.
Sierra 60 TMK's, N133 powder, will shoot lights out and provide very low extreme spread.

You see where I am going with this.

MY 1/8 TWIST BRUX BARREL SHOTS LIGHT OUT WITH RL15 WITH 75GR BERGERS AND H335 WITH 50GR V-MAX =BUGHOLES WITH 450 PRIMERS

I've got an 18", 8 twist Bartlein that will make one little splash mark on steel at 300 with this load

52 Nosler CC 2.262 OAL
25.5 Benchmark
Federal 205
PMC brass

A couple guys on arfcom swear by this load-
Case: Commercial Rem. 91gr
Primer: Rem 7-1/2 BR
Bullet: Hornady 53gr V-Max
Powder: RL-15 27.0gr
OAL: 2.240"

Another popular load is 23.2 grains of 8208XBR behind a 77 SMK or 77 Nosler.

Always start low and work your way up

Caution: The powder charge needed for accuracy varies with the length of the barrel. I.e., loads that are accurate in an 18" barrel will probably not be as accurate in a 22" barrel.
