8 lb jug of Varget

Just paid 209.00 for an eight pound jug of Varget that really stung. I think the excitement of seeing it scewed my judgment. The same store had a lot of one pounders for 35.99 thats a little steap. Just nice to see it on the shelves.
Think yourself lucky, I live where the stuff is made, Australia, that same 8lb jug costs $335 here, no export/import duty, except, of course, the 'Australia Tax' we pay on ALL goods.
Can't understand how you get it so cheap!
Here, we pay $65 for 1lb of 296/748/760 powders, almost DOUBLE what I see it advertised in the US.

Cheers.

This past weekend I was in Ohio and hearing on the net that Fur, Feather and Fin had powder on sale, stopped at the Ashland store. Have not seen that much powder in one place in decades. Surprised that they could have that much in the store these days outside a magazine. They think they are low.

I got 8 pounds of Red Dot for $118.95, 8 Pounds of Unique, and 8 pounds of 296. They had 8 pound jugs of Varget, but since I have plenty, I did not check the price, but based on what I paid for the other powders, I would assume it was as discounted. They did have plenty of other powders in larger 4 and 8 pound jugs, various Reloaders as well as IMRs.

Seems to me the only way to save many $ reloading is to focus on the cost of bullets and brass as powder is only about 5-7% of the cost of a round (assuming you get 10 reloads per pc. of brass).

Exactly, that's why I shoot far more Hornady A-Max's than Berger's today. $0.28 each versus $0.48 each.

I bought a 6br so I could save money on powder,, over a 308! 😳Last January, I drove thru a snow storm to pay $220 for an 8# of Varget. Years ago, I said I'd quite smoking when a pack went to a dollar. Kmart had it right. Cost of the hobby. Has anyone priced a candy bar, lately. They used to be a nickel.

$36 for a pound of VARGET! Ridiculous!

Then again...As long as folks pay that silly price....

Paid $22 a pound for both Varget and H-4350 this weekend.

I'll shoot my air rifle until component prices come down significantly. And come down they will if we don't buy the product and it sits on the store's shelf collecting dust. Look what happened to the price of oil when demand dropped off.
These high prices will continue as long we keep paying them, and the Fed keeps printing money with nothing backing the dollar. Some day 8 lbs. of powder could be half the price you paid for your rifle.

Ill be honest as much as it sucked to pay that much its over and done with. If I let a few thousand dollar rig sit in the safe over a couple dollars its time to pick a new sport/hobby. Would I do it again....YEP. 8 pounds in my 6BR will last a while and that's all I use Varget for for now. Ive got Varget from other lots in one pound cans I am going to start doing what some do and that's mix it all together. I pay 50.00 a brick for 500 .22 when I see them also and I know its ridiculous and by doing so I helped set the NEW standard for which they are sold. I also bought some VV powder to try out I hear it burns very clean and since other powders are knocking on the door of the price range I figure what the heck I might switch to shooting nothing but VV powder. Last thing...anyone got a few bucks I can borrow lol.

It isn't hard to make it worthwhile to order from powder valley around where I live. Varget at one LGS $36.99/lb. this was the lowball and at another $40.99/lb. and the highest price I have ever seen was at a Field and Stream store not too far from me and it was $49.99/lb I passed on all of them... but then again I have some. The LGS with the $40.99 varget price also had VVN110 for $44.99/lb. There is something to be said for price and demand, call me a pessimist but even if demand falls off I don't expect things to get better price wise anytime soon. I would expect the supply side to be cut before lower prices can kick in there is a lot of money being made right now. Take a look at FFP scopes if you want to see some real gouging.

Several years ago when shopping for tires and oil was at an all time high (about $150 per barrel) I heard it from every tire company that the inflated price of tires was because of the oil prices. Today I need tires once again but now oil is one third the price per barrel, but guess what? Tires are still $250 each same as they were several years ago.

My point is, once an industry has an excuse to inflate prices, the higher prices never go away. I can't ever see Varget much below $180-$200 per jug ever again. It's popular and shooters aren't going to stop using it over the price. Same with 22's, primers, projectiles, and cigarettes.

I'd pay that price if I could find Varget in an 8 lb. container, one local shop had 3-1 lb. jugs with 3 different lot numbers until I walked in.

This not being able to order via the internet or phone just sucks!!

I quit when they hit $0.80/pack. Also, those "nickel candy bars" were a lot bigger than the "dollar ones" are today. Isn't progress wonderful. ::)

Found 8lb of Varget at the Gun Show this weekend. $209 +tax I bought it as I only had 1lb left. VV140 was $46 a lb glad to be shooting a 6BR.

Have less than a pound left. Just purchased from Natchez:
$182.99 + hazship = $236.30

Still cheaper that locally available $30 / lbs.

Just heard Tuesday at the range that a local shop has Varget in stock that they''re having a hard time selling. Seems like most of the local shooters have moved on to other powders that were back on the market quicker than Varget and they like them better.

Personally I'm finding that IMR 4064 yields superb accuracy in my .308. Better than any of my Varget loads.

I've always been a huge fan of IMR 4064. Probably one of the most underrated powder out there. My Garands, M1A's, and 308 bolt gun loves it.

What is the trend for a varget replacement in .223 loads?

For my AR's I like CFE 223 and in my Bolt Action with bullets 69 grains to 80 grains I like Alliant PP2000MR. Good speed and good accuracy. Both meter well in my XL-650 when I "bulk load".
