Basically, yes. Some of us neck down 7x57 brass to form our 6mm AI brass.

Good snag on that rifle, you should be happy with it. If I had the money you would have missed out!!!!!!! 
I built a sporter from a VZ24 Mauser action and military 7X57 barrel. I also built a sporter from a clapped out 7mm Spanish Mauseer and added a re-chambered Remington take-off in 7X57 for my Grandson.
Both shoot very well for a hunting rifle. Unfortunately, the Grandson's can outshoots mine!!!
This year I bagged a black tail deer and a pig within 30 min! both one shot kills.
With 140 gn bullets you can easily attain 2800fps and above.
Unless you want light loads from most commercial manufacturers (scared of untrue small ring Mauser tales), you will have to load your own.
I tried 162gn A-MAX as I read they were good kill rounds for small thin skinned game like black tail. Wrong! They are VERY accurate, but expand explosively and destroy too much meat for me. I am going to 140 gn bullets now and use 140 gn TTSX Barnes in my Mauser barreled gun as it is long throated and likes the long copper bullets.

I do handload and look forward to fiddling with it. I may look for another stock for it and dress it up a bit. I really didnt need it but just couldnt pass it up for that price. sounds like it will make a great whitetail rig out to 250 yards or so. ive never had a winchester, but there classy looking little rifles.
My old Ruger ts 7x57 does not like 140 gr bullets, ( believe me I tried them all). It does love 154 gr Hornadys and other heavier bullets. Your Winchester may do well with 140's, but if it don't try something heavier. I got a hunch after your wife and kids use it, you may take a liking to it. It's just an excellent game killer. Barlow
