7x57 Spanish Mauser issue

Greetings guys/gals, Steve here in Tn. I recently picked up 7x57 Spanish Mauser with OVIEDO and 1923 stamped on it. I have had many guns over the span of my life (75 years), well starting at about 8, but don't consider myself an authority on them by any means. Anyway the gun is a gift for my grandson who just graduated from anesthesia school and is a huge WWII buff. I would have loved to have given him an M1, but that wasn't even close to my budget. I know the 7x57 Mauser wasn't used in WWII but he loves all military arms and was thrilled with the gift. The question I have is, After buying some stripper clips and a cleaning rod for it I found that the cleaning rod won't go all the way into its place under the barrel. I thought it probably just had some debris in there and thought if I gently worked it in and out and used some oil I could get it cleaned out. What happened instead was I got it stuck and thought I would never get it out. Has anyone here had this happen, and, if so, how do I fix this issue? Thanks for any ideas. Steve

I don't know what condition your Mauser is but that cleaning rod holder/ port has not seen a cleaning rod in years. You might try separating the metal from the wood to be sure nothing has built a home in there. as I recall, there is a groove in the barrel channel for the rod. Sample some YouTube videos for separating the two. The barrel bands are the biggest problem but nothing you can't overcome. It's a classic, kind of like a 57 Chevy.

Riesel, thanks for the input. I will give that a try. I just didn't know if I was overlooking something that maybe I needed to do to release a mechanism that was holding the rod out. I'd say you are right though, just some debris of some kind. Take care. Steve

Some need to have the middle band depressed to access and lock the cleaning rod . This is only true if your cleaning rod has a thinner section . If its threaded than disregard. Again assuming you have the correct cleaning rod .

There are two types of 1893 Spanish Mausers, the rifle and the carbine. You may have bought a cleaning rod for the rifle and have the shorter carbine. Please measure the barrel and the cleaning rod and report back for further help.

Bingo! I thought about the rifle/carbine possibility yesterday and you hit the nail on the head. I googled it and found that there are two barrel lengths, 21" and 27" (?) (can't remember the longer one), and I obviously have the longer rod. Glad to finally get this sorted. The rod I have is threaded on one end and I figured it might have had a "knob"or small handle on those threads to aid in using it, but then thought it might have been to screw into its resting place, to hold it there.? But it also has a groove turned in it, which is probably what Ggmac was referring to. I guess I need to find the correct rod for the carbine. I can't believe I didn't think of this since so many rifles were also made in a carbine version. Thanks again for the input guys. Everybody stay safe in this crazy time we're living in. Regards, Steve

OK, as per a video I watched, I dropped a 1/8" rod down into the hole for the cleaning rod, marked it at the mid point of the front sight, pulled it out and measured it. I get 14 1/2" +or-, so I am looking for a 14 1/2" cleaning rod. I see online a bunch of these but most are listed for a German or "YUGO" (Yugoslavian?) rifle. Will these work on the Spanish Mauser? Also, should these screw into a threaded block in the stock, since it appears that the ones I see listed do NOT have a groove on them?
