7x57 for pronghorn

I must have read the same book as you did, I read several be for my big trip in 1989. I influenced by the book bought a 25-06 for my lope adventure. Now i understand that the differences are way smaller than I had thought. Looks to me like just about any of the 6.5 mm chamberings would be a good pick. I was successful with my 25-06, and I hope you are too!

Thanks man, I'm already having fun getting ready.

Hello,

I have been drawn for pronghorn this fall and want to develop a load for my 7x57 for this fall's pronghorn hunt. I have read over the years that a 25-06 is basically the best cartridge for pronghorn hunting so my theory is to build a 7x57 load that mimics the 25-06. I found a load published by Speer that reports approx. 3300 MV from a 24" barrel using a 110 Gr projectile using 54.0 grains of W760. The stats seem in the same ballpark as a 25-06. I am comfortable shooting targets 400 yards away. My guide has recommended that I become comfortable shooting targets 500-600 yards away.

What do you think? Can you spot any blind spots in my thinking? Do you have better suggestions? I am open to advice.

You have the cartridge that will work. Find an accurate load and PRACTICE!

Thanks for your post. Great looking buck. The 7mm-08 is a great design.
But a 7x57 should whip it any day of the week with good handloads.

However a few yrs back with a 7-08 I had just worked up with the lowest cost pills from our local shop (120gr SPFB Hornady) I took a good Red hind at 250 and was amazed at the terminal performance.
140's sure will hold their velocity further out but nothing beats a well placed shot with the right projectile for the job at hand.

In mine, n-540 shoots .4” and es of 16 with the 101 hammer hunter and quite fast also.
N-150 with 120 tsx shot .356” and es 8

Could be guide wants you to practice at what he believes is a max distance. Than will ask you how your shooting at 600. And you tell him, I'm shooting ok at 500, 600 is not good. Than he knows 250 max. Just how it works.

I just drove through that country you are about to hunt near Flagstaff and most of it is flat and wide open. A 600 yard shot is a definite possibility. There are some small changes in elevation, very small long sloping rolleys that would probably just be enough to hide a goat from a couple hundred yards away but for the most part there is not much to hide behind for a stalk. This is just what I saw from the highways driving. We did however see plenty of goats just driving through the country so there should be plenty to choose from.

That being said, the 7x57 is a fine cartridge but I would be looking to shoot something like the 168gr Berger out of it to buck the wind. There was definitely plenty of that up there. I would also get a good scope with turrets and practice that 600 yard shot and get to know your load.
