7STW Action

Greetings, I’ve decided to build a 7stw and would like to use a Remington stainless action. Would I use the long action mag, or the long action mag with 300rum bolt face? Those appear to be my two choices. Thanks!

Yes, great choice. I would suggest you go one step further, have a Wyatt's magazine box installed which will give you another .125 in OAL.

Another good choice would be 7mm LRM. Same ballistics in a non belted case. Got one and love it. 180gr. berger at 3,000

I had looked into that and added it to my build list already, but thanks for the positive “review” if you will!

I'm not aware that a long action Remington 700 is any different for a 300 RUM or a 300 Win Mag. The bolt face MAY be different since the RUM is rebated, but the only difference I have seen in my internet searches is a difference in the magazine box to allow for the larger diameter RUM cartridge (possibly the follower as well). Do you have a gunsmith doing this build? If so ASK HIM/HER, they would be the expert with reliable information.

You just need a 700 standard magnum. In the early days, everyone in the country was buying Rem 7 mags and trying to find a smith that had a reamer. My first was on a 7 mag 700 action with 8 mm Rem cases we necked down. The one I'm shooting now, is on a Tac 300 action, Bartlein 26" 3B-5R.Running 3050 fps with 180 Bergers in a 3.82" Wyatt's box.

Just had a 1:8 twist barrel chambered for the 195. I used to run 140s and 160s, but now I like the heavies. Very moderate recoil, with a 4 port brake. You're gonna Love it.

Note: The feed rails on the rum are wider than the 7 mag. My son built a 7 RUM on an old STW action and the smith had to open it up to feed.

If you are planning on using this rifle for long range shooting, you will want to use heavy for caliber high BC VLD style bullets. If you use VLD bullets, you'll want to seat them out close to the lands using a reamer designed with enough freebore that keeps the bullet bearing surface out of the donut area at the base of the neck. If you seat heavy VLDs close to the lands in a 7STW case, that sucker is gonna be looooooooong! Which of course means you will need an extremely long magazine.

So if your plans are for building a custom long range 7mm repeater rifle that is very accurate, you would be better served using a shorter case that gives similar performance. ie; 28 Nosler or something to that effect. Even if you manage to fit the rounds in an extended magazine using VLD bullets, the bullet tips will be so close to the front magazine wall that they will probably get damaged under recoil if you do not install a muzzle brake.

Just my opinion from experience building long case magnum rifles and later wishing I had chambered for something else when trying to seat heavyweight VLD bullets where they perform best.

The standard LA mag action and the RUM long action mag action are the same in bolt face. The only difference is the magazine box with "windows" and the feed rails are different to allow the fatter case to properly feed. Your STW project will work fine in a plain jane LA magnum action. I have a zero freebore reamer and 7mm throater in STW to set things up properly. The STW is my favorite "factory" magnum case. I have wildcatted a few that I prefer, such as the 7mm/300 Win Mag, fits perfectly in the mag box and the 7mm/338 RUM which does need the RUM action. I have a 30/338 RUM that I just finished in a takeoff Remington 300 Win Mag barrel to see how I like it before ordering a blank. Get plenty IMR7828 for the 140`s and H1000 for the 160/168 class bullets. Good luck!
