7rem mag short barrel twist rate?

Hey guys looking at putting a 20inch barrel on my remington 700 7mag and was wondering what kind of twist rate I would need in a 20inch barrel to stabilize anything from a 160-180 grain bullet? tips on a fast burning powder would be appreciated as well.

It depends on the bullet makes you plan to shoot but a 1:9 should be adequate. A few of the really long 7mm heavies (i.e. Barnes 168 LRX) can require a 1:8.5 twist in the worst conditions (high air density). I shoot 180 hybrids in a 1:9 at sea level regularly with no problems.

I am very close to sea level as well and plan on shooting something like a 180 VLD or something very similar to that. Just want to go with a short barrel (20in) but with a pretty heavy contour.

The length of the barrel and therefore the velocity of the round have very little affect on stability above 1,300 fps. The only bullet I have found I could not stabilize in the 1:9 was the Barnes 168 LRX. The 180 Hybrids, 175 Nosler LRAB, and 175 Sierras all fly fine out to 1300 yards for me at 200 feat above sea level.

Hello , I shoot the 168 VLD with good success in a factory 700 long range with 1 in 9 , don't know for sure about a fast powder due to barrel life but H1000 works super for me . Most of my shooting is at 1100 ft or below.

20" 7 Mag is going to be louder than you could ever imagine. I had a short barrel like that, ended up running IMR 4064 with a 140g to keep the concussion down on my head, I swear, it was awful. I developed a bad flinch from shooting it with ear muffs on .

The price of a short barrel on a big magnum is lost velocity and a big muzzle blast. The effect on stability of the bullet can be determined by using the Berger Twist Rate calculator. Enter your twist rate, expected velocity, elevation, and temperature. Select Berger bullets of interest from the drop down table and see what you get.

I think those who have QuickLoad will tell you that you can't really save velocity by using a faster powder in a shorter barrel.
