7mmSAUM or 280AI?

wow,,,,Im amazed that anybody has built 100 RSAUM"S....one a month would take 10 yrs,,,I am ignorant of the times and didnt realize that there were this many in use,,,Roger

There's a ton of rifles being built in the SAUM family. It's a well designed modern case. A couple more grains in a very efficient and tough case with the SAUM.

the 280 has the same case cap. as the RSAUM and the 280 AI ~2gr more powder cap,,,,and you can make them out of Lapua 06' cases....you can use any action with 308/30-06 bolt face ,,,Roger

You might talk to Ryan Pierce or George Gardner to ask about the prevalence of the RSAUM cartridges. Not all gunsmiths build 1-rifle a week/month.;) I just talked to one gunsmith who builds 23 rifles a month, not by himself, of course. He has a small staff.

Both the 7mm RSAUM and .300 RSAUM brass is for sale currently so you don't need modifications or fireforming unless you're trying achieve some other cartridge. You can choose from Norma, Nosler or Winchester (who finally got back into gear...). And, you can use any short action available with a magnum boltface, which are readily available these days.

Regards.

Been playing around with the Sierra ballistics program over the past few weeks and am pleasantly surprised by how close the performance out to 400yd is between the Rem .280, .280AI and 7mmSAUM with Hornady's 175gr ELD-X bullet. With a zero at 200yd, the Rem.280 is down ~3" more than the other two at 400yd and within 300ft-# of energy (1600 vs 1900). Am thinking the standard Rem.280 is the way to go for an "all around" hunting cartridge. That's using load data from the Nosler website and the 0.689 BC from the Hornady website. Use the 150gr ELD-X for deer and antelope and the 175gr for elk & caribou the 162gr ELD-X if I ever get a chance for a mtn goat or sheep. Plus, if my crony & accuracy are lacking with Rem.280 I can always have it cut to the .280AI.

I had a long range shooter built on a defiance action and a bartlein barrel in 7 SAUM. The thing flat shoots, I could not be happier. This one in particular is a repeater, so I had it built on a long action to be able to seat the 180s long.
