7MM WSSM, has it ever been done?

Wayne, everything on your profile looks normal. I can ask Jim (wssmzone), the creator and admin, to take a look if you continue to have problems. Let me know, please.
BTW, Jim is a quadriplegic confined to a wheelchair yet still manages to hunt. He lives in Spokane.
Nomad47,
Thanks for checking into this for me, I have been in and out today and haven't replied yet sorry, it's white tail season you know ;D I was able to make one post then I started having problems I will try again tonight, I have to go out and help my son with his deer, I'll be back in after a bit and will give it a try. Spokane is about 3 hours to the north of me, I went to school up there for my eighth grade year and have family and friends there, I am glad to here Jim lives there, nice place for as big as it is.
Wayne.

Nomad,
I've been to the Williamsport BR school 3 times now. This last year I got to shoot a 6.5-25WSSM. On the last day student match I shot it for a 5shot group of 4.23" (4 in 1.5") at 1K. This from an unproven shooter (me) driving an unfamiliar gun. I don't want to dis the 7 but cannot imagine a more accurate rifle than the 6.5. Of course you should shoot whatever would please you the most.
Graf has/had 25WSSM brass (bought 200).

John

Just a heads up. 223 and 243WSSM has a 28 degree shoulder, 25WSSM brass has 30 degree. Just be carefull when buying dies , reamer etc that they all match up.
By the way, for my 6.5WSSM chamber, necks are turned down far enough, that I use a standard cheap 25 WSSM FLS die. My chamber reamer was used to make the neck die.

That's a fine performance John! Care to pass along the load you were using? What your experiences have been with loads you've tried?

I'm new to the 6.5 WSSM but if the barrel on my new acquisition's not too long in the tooth I hope to do well with it in 2012 before ordering up a new one.

I think he was shooting Martin Dailey's rifle while going thru the class. Martin is 20th on this list: http://www.pa1000yard.com/results/toplists.php?cls=Light+Gun&grsc=Group&topct=All&year=2009

You might notice in 1kyd comp LG equipment lists that 6mms(~6dasher, 6x47) stand out as excellent performers by the numbers.
This is very predictable.
It starts with a high BC bullet that is consistent(~105gr). Then there is the capacity to push it competitvely, with enough competitve barrel life to be viable, in a case geometry and quality that allows higher than normal pressures(for more consistent burn). Combined with 6PPC data, there are balances here for all to see and apply in other cals.

You could step down one notch in accuracy potential(as a dasher does w/resp to PPC), but gain in wind, with a 260AI. This will show up & stand out before long now that Lapua is making 260 cases.
The bullets are there(~140gr), the capacity is right, plenty of powders, and it's difficult to screw up really.

A 26WSSM holds the same potential, but is very easy to screw up with.
It is way way thicker, and larger in diameter. So it must be turned, and a magnum action used(not any old short action), and all this must be planned out from the git go. It hasn't been, and that is one reason there are not a lot of 26WSSMs competing.
Anyway, for many obvious reasons, you won't see any competitive 22, 24, 25, 27, 28, or 30WSSMs. Only the 26WSSM is right, and with efforts to get there..

To the original subject -bottom line, the WSSM case does not hold the capacity for competitive 28cal bullets. Step up to the 7SAUM or 7WSM for this.

Hey Nomad,
You're right. It was easy to shoot. Martins instruction took a little rough edge off that I had developed. Made it real easy to group. We needed longer for zeroing. Smallest group, lowest score. Can't wait to go back. If we get a higher mpg car we'll go more often.
Thanks for the link. It points the way better than I had imagined it would. Surprise was NO 7s. Kinda disappointing.
Were you there?

John

Kenny474,
My apology for running around on your thread. Hope you're not offended.
www.wssmzone.com doesn't have much on the 7 either (that I've found yet)

John

John, we've been talking about the 6.5 wssm over there (wssmzone) lately. Very little has been said about the 7wssm. The WSSM has been wildcatted to 6.5, .30, .357, and .44 and probably more that I'm not aware of.

John,
Kenny474 hasn't been on the forum for the most part of a year, however if he was he wouldn't care he was a lot of fun, I will email him the this thread is alive again, maybe I can coax him out here ;)
Wayne.

Boz,
Thanks. When I thought (finally) about it I just went back to see who started it 'cause I was pretty sure we were no longer talking about what he was. I did not think (again) to look at the date. Been a pretty nice thread actually.
John

I have a 6.5-243wssm in an Ar-15 it was easy to make shoot sub moa and it is instant death on baited coyotes... If I cut out the front of the mag to let oal grow.....It works fine with up to 130 gr bullets. I suspect it would work fine in 7mm if you didn't want to use heavy vld bullets

Probably not exactly what you're after but here's a builder that chambers for a 7wssm.

No offense taken at all. Just glad to see some info finally coming about on this round. Or a similar round, to be specific.

And no, I never did build one. I had some issues with my right eye (I'm right handed and right eye dominant, so that created some issues for me with shooting), and a lot of stuff got put on hold.
I do still have a 7mm barrel kicking around somewhere......
This thread makes me want to get creative. Maybe I'll have to blow all the sawdust off the lathe......

Kenny,
Hello to you my old friend, glad I could con you into a come back, you have been thoroughly missed, I hope it isn't a one time thing but if it was at least you made a appearance and updated your last appearance. I told you Kenny wouldn't mind ;D
Wayne.

I was missing talking to you Wayne, had to come back to see an old friend. I'll likely stop in a time or two a week. I don't have quite as much time as I once did, but I'm finally getting back to where I have some free time to cruise the net and chat with old friends.

Working on building a business and clientele sure takes up a lot of my time. But it's been worth it for sure. Met a lot of new friends, learned a lot, and of course, made some money too. I may be making wood shavings rather than the steel and aluminum like I had planned, but I think it's all worked out pretty well. And having all the machinery sure comes in handy for making one-off and specialty tooling and jigs!

Good to talk to you again Wayne. Hope the holidays are a happy time for you and your family as well!

Kenny

Thank you Kenny, I wish you and your family a Merry Christmas and a prosperous new year, I will email you in a few days to collect your thoughts on a couple of builds I am working on, it sure is good to have you back on here :)
Wayne.
