7mm Twist

Hey folks,

Here are the build specs:
Use: long range hunting
Receiver: Surgeon SA
Caliber: .284 Win
Barrel: 24" Kreiger #4 Sporter in SS
Preferred bullet weight: 7mm 140gr - 160gr

My question is, for hunting bullets in the 140 to 160 grain range, what would be an ideal twist. I'm wanting to shoot Nosler Partition or Accubond, something along those lines. I will be loading them short,2.90"), to fit both mag and Surgeon SA receiver. From my research I'm gathering around a 10 or 9.5, but does anybody have any experience or opinions.
Thanks

Your research was good. Both those will work fine. The standard 1:9 also works really well. I would go for the 1:9.5twist. I like to error on the faster side if I can. Ive been stuck to many times with wanting to shoot heavier bullets and cant. But your Mag length loading may limit that anyway.

1:10 would be fine for your project. Nice choice of components and calibre. Two thumbs up from me. ; )

i am a 284 fanatic..I have 2 and having a third built now.Do a search on,home.earthlink.net/ rfrailey )just like you see it.and you will find the most extinsive 284 load testing anywhere.i have found everything there has given me the same results. besides it is a very intereting thing to read.i printed me off a copy.it was priceless info for me.my favorate load is 140 nosler ballistic tip,vv160 55grains,wincheter primer.winchester brass. bartlein barrel 1 in 10 twist.i would sujest 1 in 10, it is perfect for 140 to 154 grain bullets. 1 in 9.5 does not do as good with the 140 in another rifle barrel i had.but will do wonderful with the 150

Thanks you very much for the help. I'm going to go with a 1:9.5. I'm planing to shoot 150's for deer, and hopefully 160's for moose, so I think I want to be err on the fast side. This is if I can squeeze the 160's into the case enough to make mag length.
I'm going with a 24" barrel as a comprimise between speed and weight. A 26" will get me a few more fps at the expense of weight for a hunting rifle. A 22" would be nice and light but I'm sacrificing fps.
This is just my thinking, any thoughts or comments appreciated.

I ordered my barrel today and ended up going with a #5 contour because it is the smallest contour Kreiger will do in a .284/7mm Stainless. Good thing my stock was not started at McMillan and was able to change the inletting from a #4 to a #5.

I have a 7mag with a 1-9.25" twist which shoots 150-168 very well. Its a 26" tube. However when i get to change barrels i will also be going with a 24" 1-9 or 1-9.5" twist one. as it will aid with the balance of the rifle.
