7mm Twist - What's Preferred?

Looking at a 7mm for 1000yd competition and am wondering what the correct twist would be for the heavier bullets up to 180gr. Thanks.

I use 9 twist barrels with Berger 180 Hybrids and Berger 180 VLDs. Cases are the 7RSAUM and my 7mmWalker (.284 Win variant).

Walker is on the money. 9 twist.

Isn't he always?

Go here: http://www.bergerbullets.com/litz/TwistRuleAlt.php. Input your info and find out what twist you REALLY need. You may be surprised to find out how much altitude and temp effect bullet stability.

I've shot all 9-twist bbls with three different 284s & one 280 AI, and they all do a great job with bullets as long as the Berger 180 Hybrid. Never shot anywhere lower than 1440' MSL though, but IIRC, Jerry Tierney shot a 9-twist 284 at Sacramento.

i like 1:8 twist, the 195 EOL berger will hopefully be released in the next year or two and you are going to wish you had a 1:8-1:8.5 twist. A G1 estimated BC of .794 is nothing to sneeze at...

Barrels are relatively cheap and I already have two 8.5" Brux barrels, more than adequate for the 195 Hybrid. I also have a 7-270 WSM reamer with a .233" freebore. Takes about fifteen minutes to change a barrel. I'm currently shooting 230 Hybrids in .300 WSM and they have a data-derived .41 G7, after pointing, the best B.C. available in smaller calibers. The 195, if and when it appears, could be a game changer and your point about being prepared is well taken. But, by the time they appear, whatever barrel I'm currently shooting would be toast, anyway.

I dont shoot competition, only long range practice and long range hunting, so, depending on caliber, a barrel will last me 2 years +. Now that i got thinking about it, i think a 7mm rum with these 195s going 3300 fps would be pretty awesome.
