7mm STW

Hi guys,

This is my first post to these boards so I will make it short and sweet.

I am in the process of building a new F class Rifle. I want to know if the 7mm STW is a good caliber to run with in competetion. Or should I be looking at something else in a .30 Calibre or the 6.5-284. Althougth I hear the 7mm STW has a much flatter trajectory than 30 calibers.

Yes the 7mm STW is a little flatter shooting than most 30cals. It won't keep with the 300 Remington Ultra Mag. I won't try shooting my 300RUM in competitions. My 300RUM gets hot QUICK and takes forever to cool. The 7mm STW is also a barrel burner. There are some really good long range 7mm,.284) bullets on the market.

I really don't think you can go wrong with a 6.5-284 for F-class shooting. It's also a barrel burner but I don't think it's as bad as the STW are. Just take really good care of the barrel with whatever you choose.

You might want to give the plain old .284 a try with the 168grMK or other match bullets in the 7MM class. There are a lot of guys trying these out now instead of the 6.5x284 because of the better barrel life they may produce.

I don't think that you would perform your best with the recoil of the 7 STW. 55 plus shots prone in a match. Then 2 or 3 days in a regional or a National. A 7SAUM or a 7/300WSM is about all the recoil I can handle for a match and still break a good shot at the end of the day. It seems that the best velocity right now is about 2980 for the 180 Bergers. It would take more powder in a STW to get to 3000 than the other two. More powder, pushing more weight through the barrel with more jet effect means more recoil.

I have a 6.5x284 that's built super heavy for fopen, I have a special edition 7mm stw that literally fell into my lap. This gun was only offered two years it's got the engraved Floorplan, I have every intention of using mine as a hunting rifle as it's quite a bit lighter ss fluted barrel. You can shoot one in f class, but as most members state it might last 5-600rnds that won't get a guy very far shooting matches unless you have a couple barrels made up and fitted so if you see things start to open up you can put the barrel in a barrel vise n take your chamber wrench spin that one off and spin your next profit barrel on and take right off hopefully. I don't think if I'm using mine for a hunting rifle I probably won't ever shoot the barrel out that way. Another avenue would be to shoot something that isn't so overcome, I like the 7mm saum, the 7mm wsm, maybe even the 7mmx.375Ruger I think there is an advantage with higher b.c. with the 7mm stuff

The 7 STW will cook your barrel in no time flat. You don't want to run 80 + grains of powder in that size bore if you don't ABSOLUTELY have to.
