7mm SAUM twist- shorter barrel needs more twist?

Ok so the build is a little unique. It's going to be a 7mm SAUM in a long action shooting the Berger 180gr Hybrids from a 18" barrel, yes a 18" barrel.

I'm trying to decide whether to use a 1-8 or a 1-8.5 twist barrel. My thoughts are the 1-8 because it's such a short barrel. Anybody have any thoughts?

Thanks

Fitter,
I am in the process of doing the same thing, only mine will be in 284 Win caliber, with a total overall 21-3/4" bbl length,(which includes the muzzle brake) with a rear grip in pistol form, with a Lepy 4x15x50 with MOA reticle.

I am using a 1x8" twist to be on the safe side, that way any bullet weight could be used, and I can make 2700+fps/162gr Horn AMax bullets with the proper powder for the bbl length.

I will be following this post with an interest.

Thank you,
Don

I talked with Berger and Kreiger today and the consensus is that you can't over spin, so I will be most likely using a 1-8 as well.

The 1 in 8 twist works great in all my short barreled XP-100's, even my 338/284 likes the 18" 8 twist..
