7mm saum build question...

I just received a Krieger 1-8.5 twist barrel an was wondering the optimal length for my new build. Its 31 from the factory so should be able to finish at 30.. Thinking this may be to long.. Suggestions.... Looking to shoot 168 or 180 VLDs..Thanks!!

The 1000 yard shooters use 30 inch plus. It depends what you want it for. Carrying a 30 inch in the woods is tough. Matt

This is going to be a bench / prone 1000yrd to whatever steel shooter... I'm not one of these guys that has to have 3800fps from a 180vld.. I'm more interested in accuracy and barrel life as opposed to setting velocity records..

IMHO-Finish it long. I run a 27" Bartlein and a 28" Criterion, next one will be 30". The extra weight also helps with recoil management. BTW- what a great cartridge that makes looking good at long range easier!

I have had 5 7MM SAUMS, a 28", (2) 30", 31", and currently running a 32" mixture of Kriegers and Brux 8.5 and 9 twist. I have gotten them all to shoot and shoot really well, but I would have to say that I would go over 30" if possible on any further builds since the two that where really hummers where a 31" Krieger with an 8.5 twist and my current 32" Brux with the 9 twist.

Thanks for the info so far.. Going to leave is as long as possible... What are the velocities differences you are seeing going from a 28" to 31"? Did you have to switch powder? Newbie here and I have a lot of questions.. Thanks

same powders, I usually get around 30fps per inch in added velocity. but each gun I treat completely differently so it's not a complete for sure apple to apples comparison.

I know 30fps is 30fps... but is that the only reason for the longer barrels? I take it most are shooting the 180 grain..

Yes the 180's in all of them except the one I am shooting now the Brux 32" 9 twist and I am shooting the 168 hunting VLD's. it may be the most accurate one of the bunch.
