7mm Remington Magnum True...

I have read many topics about 7mm and more specialy about the King of Them.... The 7mm Remington Magnum...

To sum up... the 7mm RM is one of the best designed catridge of all time... It will be to long to explain why... but some cartridge like 243W, 338 Lapua, 375 Ruger, 7mm RM show astonishing performance, far better than they should....

Today, a new trend of marketed cartriges have been lauched : 7 STW, 7mm RUM, 7mm WSM etc etc and NONE can stand with 7mm Remington Magnum... for the "fat boy" like Ultra, STW, you buy more barrel wearing, throat erosion, far more), more recoil, more powder using for nothing more.... WHY ???? BECAUSE the 7mm RM has been victim of a "wimp - ize" decease in the last decade...

Yes when you buy the first production of 7mm RM manufactured it was able to drive and marketed for a 175gr at 3050-3070fps. Today for commercial/marketing reasons we can buy only a ghost of the old time... Handloading, it's the real road of the power for the 7mm Remington Magnum... no other cartridge, except maybe the 243W) win more by being handloaded..

I use the 7mm RM exclusively for LR and Hunting and I don't know better cartrige... you can find a more adapted caliber for a specific game but for the guy who wants an all round cartridge for long range hunting, from medium to big game) it's the choice. For LR shooting or sniping no other caliber can compete with him.

The 7mm RM give this performance : with a 160gr SBT bullet at 3200 fps or a 175 SPT at near +/- 3050 Fps with high BC & SD bullets no game well hit, will escape and this from 250 meters at more than 500 meters... field tested....

For long range / sniper shooting a 168gr Bullets HPBT or a 162gr Amax at +3000Fps have a better ballistic than a 338 Lapua Magnum.... all that performance with less recoil, less wear, less drift than a 300WM, 338 Lapua. in a word the 7mm Remington Magnum is the most EFFICIENT caliber.

To reach top performance, you need a 26Ic or 27ic but for me the best balance for a sporter or a LR rifle seem to be 26ic and selected good .. Norma Brass, CCI 250, Fed 215, Sierra, Berger, Nosler, Hornady and a selectif choice of powders. it's often the most difficult parameter but too especially for the 7mm RM. the Norma MRP is a very good choice for 160/170gr, Hodgon H1000, RL25, Vithavuori VN560-VN165-VN170 are top contender for 160-175gr bullets range.

For "short" afficionados, the reality : WSM are cheaters with heavy BT, LD bullets and bring nothing... they just benefit of under/low loaded current 7mm RM commercial load...

I write this columm just because when you visited many forums... it's always same questions : what is the best LR caliber, what caliber is a top performer but with not too much recoil, wearing... there is one... but the current trend to gon on 308 bullets or 338 bullets and "fat boy" or "short boy" bring to forget the true... some "old caliber" like 7 RM or 243W,for 6mm) with right compoments, length barrel 26ic, right slow burning powder)are always the best...

Don't listen so-called expert.... in the last decade many of real, honest guns-writer who told the true, like ross seyfried, for example)have been fired... American Publication come from only one or two Holding now which are "at the sold" of Firearms companies... some new stuff like 338 Lapua, 375 Ruger are true innovation... but many other are only cosmetic.....

The new short fat 7's will out run it with less powder, and better accuracy, and you can get lots more loads out of the same piece of brass before it needs trashed, if it ever does.....

To have try some "Fat short".... you can be close in performance with 7mm RM in the 120-140gr bullets range, maybe 150gr bullets but after in the 160-175gr "class" range, best weight ratio BC/SD) you can't match performance of 7mm RM - 7mm Why... and the advantage of the 7mm RM with VLD, HPBT bullets is far stronger... I have no doubt... because old Magnum like 7 RM and 300 WMG hold heavy bullet far better than fat short....

and don't compare an anemic 7 RM load shoot trough a 24ic.... because it's right : "a fat short heavy loaded 7mm is a better choice with a 24ic barrel..... BUT with a 26ic barrel and a REAL 7 RM load no comparaison is possible !!!! and trust me 200 fps at 1000yds it's a bunch o minute of angle....

Try a stout 168gr / 162 Amax load and you will see... For accuracy... It's like women some are better than other... but in this department 7 RM is a real takedriver.... and for brass... try Norma, Hornady, RWS.

It's always true for 300W MG vs 300 WSM... over 180gr bullets range....

From your comments, it does not sound like you know anyone shooting a 7 WSM, or 7 SAUM. I'm happy to give you some info.

I know at several other shooters using 7WSM, 7/300WSM or 7 SAUM shooting F-Class. I know several more using their Magazine fed 7WSMs in tactical matches. All of these guys are running them at 2,950-3,000 fps from their rifles using the 180 Berger VLDs.

Personally, I drive mine at 2,900-2,925 fps because that is all I need for the ballistic advantage that I want, there is a heck of an accuracy node where I stopped, and I have the ability to run my load at nominal pressures year round in Las Vegas,we take summer pretty serious here in the desert, and I use this rig as an F-Class open rifle shooting year round). Here is my rig wearing its 26" 9 twist Krieger.

To me the disadvantages of the Rem. Mag's belted case and need to use a long action take away any possible advantage from the 7 Rem. Mag.'s 1.0 grain powder capacity advantage over,82.00 versus 81.00) the 7WSM.

It really don't matter who's brass you use in the 7RM because they all have that pesky belt to deal with that don't take to sizing down with regular dies very good...
Usually by the 4th loading the RM case won't fit in the chamber anymore unless you have a Larry Willis die.
My 7mmSAUM brass has over 8 loadings in it so far and will be good for no less than that many more with proper annealing and cleaning....
Brass is to costly to toss it after only a few times loading it......

Well, with norma Brass.. I have no specific problem and after 3 loads I go on with new brass,I'm sure I could use again many people use them twice than me) because with heavy loaded Magnum cartridge it's a better way.... shooting have a cost...

But I'm astonishing by advantage to work with short magnum.... short action and brass Yeah you're right it's a pitty "innovation" in term of performance...

So the only right thing... is to use a 7mm Bore,7mm RM - 7mm Why is better :)) understand that is a great step...

I don't know what do you think ? but personnaly the 7mm is the best caliber for an all purpose using like LR shooting, medium-big game hunting at long range.. My second best friend is the 243W with similar recipe,26ic Barrel, Norma MRP and 90-95gr SBT, BTHP bullets)
