7mm Remington Mag Build HELP !!

First of all just want to says thanks for all the replies I got on my last post. This is what I am planning for my build. after a huge amount of deliberation I have decided on a 7mm Rem Mag. I have looked at the top BC of bullets sold by berger and sierra. The highest bullets are 7mm as compared to a .30 cal that's 210 grains. For this gun I am going to do long range shooting with it and also would like to hunt with it given the chance. So, my question is...have I made the right choice or should I just go with a .30cal like a .308 like everyone else or something else...thanks !!

7mm Mag is a good choice for sure.

Another good choice is a 338 of some sort. About as good as it gets for bucking the wind and knockdown power on game. The 250gr VLDs I use have a BC of 0.682. The 300gr has a 0.818. Just depends on how much power you want.

But the 7mm Mag is better suited for the 168gr VLDs. It can't push the 180gr bullets very fast in a shorter hunting length barrel. The 180gr has a higher BC, but the added speed of the smaller 168gr bullet actually allows it to shoot flatter out to 800-1K yards or so. Only then does the added BC of the 180gr start to shine. That's kind of the same for most calibers. Generally a cartridge will perform best at long range with the bullet weight right underneath the heaviest offering.

I am seeing less than 50 FPS difference between the 168 and 180 in the various 7mmRM's I load for. Two of them have 24 inch tubes.

I say try them both and shoot what shoots best. If accuracy is a wash I will take the 50 FPS loss and shoot the 180's.

But, that's me..... ;)

Yeah I suppose if you can get the speeds that close, the 180gr is the way to go.

But if he has to have the 180gr VLDs, I think zfastmalibu nailed it with suggesting the 7LRM. A lot more power in a case that isn't really any longer. Besides more speed and power, there are also has a lot of other superior features built into the design of the 7LRM. And it can still be fired comfortably without a muzzle brake. Just my opinion though.

The 7mm Rem mag will still get the job done and reloading components and dies are more readily available
