7mm options

I have a Weatherby Vanguard in 7mm-08 brand new available to me cheap. I don't need this caliber today but since its a short action with a 308 boltface I could build it into something else. I have a 223 and a 20 practical. I also have a 25-06 and a 280 rem AI.

So I could start gathering parts for something else...opinions needed 8)

Don't know if you are referring to 7mm as where you are going or just where you are coming from. So, here is a kind of brainstorming session. In other words throwing mud on the wall to see if something sticks.

Leave it a 7-08/7-08 improved

308 Win/308 Improved

30x44 or other short 308 on 308 brass

338-08/338-08 Improved

35-08/35-08 Improved

375-08/375-08 Improved

284 Win/284 Shehane

30-284 Win/30-284 Shehane

338 or 375 -284 Straight or improved

6.5x47 Lapua/Improved

7x47 Lapua.. Straight or improved

If it shoots good I would leave it a 7mm-08 they are a great little cartridge.

OK, minor correction. Don't think that you can do a straight 375 on either the 308 or 30-06 case. Needs the improved shoulder for,good headspace control.

Nice list above. How are you going to make a short action work with long action cases? Single shot? Pull the bolt to remove brass or loaded rounds? Even some of the short action cases such as the 284 you list work way better in a long action with todays bullets.

Three things there:

1. I'm not familiar enough with the Vanguard to know if it is a long action with a shortened stop like the pre '85 M-70 and Tikka actions.

2. He might want to convert to single shot. My 284 Shehane is on a regular short action single shot. I'm shooting 180 Hybrids seated well out. I just have to remove the bolt to remove loaded rounds.

3. Even if interested in using the mag, he might only want to use it for hunting and make a single shot follower for paper. In that situation, something like the 284 would be nice.

I'm punting on this one. I have a 280 AI being built right now and don't really need a 7mm-08. I talked to my gunsmith and he wasn't real keen on building it either. In fact he said buy another Stiller action first...guess I can take a hint.

Sell the rifle and use the money towards a new build.
