7mm Rem Mag

I'm trying to get a good load on a 7rem mag with 162 amax and reloader 22 . I have most primers and using rem brass , Any Ideas as where to start and stop ? I have found that the gun loves 120gr hornady sp with 56gr of Imr 4895 but just alittle light for what I had in mind. So It is capable of shooting a small group, Any help would be appreciated.

Ok got some time to shoot today and here's the results:[ Oh Nate I got no manual for the components I'm shooting.]

Out of a bolt gun (BAT magnum action w/26" Krieger 1-9 tw), I laddered R22 w/162 AMAX from 58.5 to 60 grains. Best in my rifle was using 58.5 grns. @ 1.22" @400 yards. and using Federal Match Magnum primers and Norma cases. Sorry, didn't keep chrono data on it.

Because my goal was a hunting load - and not target load, I ended up with using 64.0 grns. RL22 powder and a BARNES 140 grn TTSX with Federal Magnum match primers and Winchester cases @3,040 f.p.s. That was with I also have a Browning BAR in 7 mag and I tried the same loads in it. It hated the AMAX load but loved the Barnes load also. I believe my AMAX load to be a bit on the light side - but the Barnes load is near the top - back both off to start. If you can't get what you want out of the amaxes for hunting - try the Barnes!

I loaded some more ammo , a few of these and a few of those and come up with a 3/4" group at 200 yards so I'm going to go with this load till I get more time to tweak it a little more when I get time but It will be good enough for deer season this year.

I loaded some light loads for the 7mm REM MAG for my brother with 162 A-MAX for about 2900 fps. Fantastic accuracy!
I also used 162 A-MAX in my VZ24 Mauser with military 7mm barrel and loaded for about 2650 fps as I heard they are a killer bullet. Well, within an hour last season, I shot a buck and a small pig. They are a killer, but on small, thin skinned game they are maybe a bit too explosive and leave a BIG exit hole!

Just remember when you load them, that they are a target bullet and are not a hunting bullet. I would not use them on anything bigger than deer, as there are better bullets out there for that. Lots of people do, though, so let your conscience be your guide.

I shoot a semi custom Savage 7mm mag with a 21" fluted barrel with a break installed. She loves the 162 Amax in front of 71 gr of Retumbo. The velocity is around 2860 but she has made many one shot kills over 300 yards on Pa whitetail most of which never took a step. As mentioned above this bullet has limitations!
