7mm Rem Mag max charge for 175g ELD-X

I am beginning load development for the 175g ELD-X in my Browning X-bolt 7mm Rem Mag with a 24" barrel. I have been shooting the 168g ABLR with decent accuracy but it took a while to get it there. I have had great luck with the ELD-X in other calibers so I'm going to make the move.

My question has to do with max charge and what people are using as a starting point. Hornady's manual says the max charge for the 175s is 60.4g of H1000 but reading other forum posts people are shooting up to 70+ grains of H1000 for these bullets. I'm going to work up a load until I begin to see pressure signs and then back down but I just wanted to see roughly what others are using with this combination. I don't want to have to load from 60g to 70g before I start seeing pressure signs.

I checked with almost every bullet and powder manufacturer to see what they recommend with the 175g pills using H1000 and it is all over the board as well. From Hornady's 60.4 max to Sierra's 69.4.

I was thinking of starting at 60.4 and working up to around 65 but would that be to low of a starting point?

Thanks for any info.

Charley

Your barrel may develop pressure sooner/later than others for many reasons.

I had great luck with the 175g Nosler LRAB(3030 fps) use R#26 and R#22(2850 fps) shooting bug holes. 26" rem factory barrel.

I got over 3000 fps with 175 Interlocks and Partitions, using 75 grains of Reloder 33. It was in a 26-inch barrel, though.

Whatever reloading manual you have and/or use always start with their listed start load and work up in your rifle. I would not start with the 60.4 load that your Hornady manual shows as max, as that is listed as max, by them. Start with their start load and work up, for your own safety. Always play safe and sane and you will not damage yourself or rifle.

Bill, that's my plan. I typically start at least 2 grains below the max and work up. I am just not used to seeing such a difference between bullet and powder manufactures when it comes to power charges for the same weight bullet. I am going to just start low and work up as normal. It may take a bit longer but like you said better safe.

Thanks for all the comments.

Not quite apples to apples, but.... Barnes MAX H-1000 for the following bullets...

168 LRX = 63.8 gr

171 MatchBurners = 68.9 gr

175 TSX = 63.6 gr

Nosler 175 gr Partition & ABLR - H-1000 MAX = 65.5 gr

Sierra 175 SBT & SMK - H-1000 MAX = 63.4 gr

If I was loading them, I'd be confident going up to 64 gr and probably comfortable going up to 65 gr.

Nosler Accubond LR is the most similar to the ELD-X.

Thanks for that information. That is exactly what I had been looking at and felt pretty safe going to around 64. What really has me boggled is that the 180g ELD-M, which is basically the same bullet as the 175g ELD-X, has a max charge of 67.9g of H1000. I emailed Hornady to verify that there was not a typo on the 175g.
