7mm Rem Mag Chamber Reamer

I am about to build a 7mm Rem Mag, I want a tight neck no turn chamber. (PTG Custom Reamer) What size neck for the reamer? I have a box of Factory Winchester ammo, I measured the loaded neck on a factory round and it is .309" I will reload with Winchester Brass and 180 Berger VLD's

I'm not sure about the 7mmRM offerings from WW but in 308 they are the thinnest necks out there. All the other brass manufacturers are thicker. I had a 308 barrel that was set up as a tight no turn with WW that bordered on unsafe with Lake City or FGMM because the neck was too tight. (0.339)

If you ever plan to shoot factory ammo that is not WW I'd go measure some others. I'd check Federal and Hornady factory stuff for starters, then talk with Dave Kiff and see what he recommends, but I'd have some data before I called. I don't have my reamer nearby right now but I think I used a .317 for my 7-08.

Hows that for service??!!!??,,,you cant beat Kiff....OBTW what ND die he recomend? >316??,,,we all can learn from it,,,,Thanks ...Roger

I know right! (Dave jump in if I say this wrong) He had what he called a "F-TR" reamer with a .313" neck. He recommended a .317" neck for hunting. I'm building this one for myself so I'm going with the .313" neck. I have a 1-8 twist barrel coming so I can shoot the 180 VLD's and then the 195 Hybrids when they are released for purchase. This will be my long range hunting rig for my trips to Nebraska (Whitetail, Mule Deer and hopefully one day a Wyoming Bull Elk)

I don't think it's an F-TR reamer since we shoot 308s in TR, that would be a little tight. :o An F Open would be the better name I think.

Yep, just a little tight.

I just measured some Norma brass from 1973 and loaded with 168 Bergers. The brass is un-turned and measures .3145 on the high side. I use w-w brass from years ago and my neck is .316. PT&G ground my reamer, Krieger #4 barrel, it shoots great about 3" @ 500yds from a 8 lb hunting rifle. Just killed my Colorado moose with it.

Well after I started this thread, I have switched gears to a 7mm LRM, (If I can get a 7mm LRM reamer) I ordered some brass and a die from Gunwerks, and it was delivered today at my house. So tonight I will load up some dummy rounds to see what the necks measure on a loaded round. How far was the shot on the Moose? Drop it?

Any chance of some pics of the Moose?

The shot was about 200 yds, not ranged, classic hit just behind the front leg joint. One shot, stood there about 20 sec. unsteady, then I shot again same spot and he went down. Both bullets were recovered under the hide on the far side. Top of the heart was hit maybe second shot. Front cavity was a mess of gelled stuff. I will post pictures soon as I learn how. Measured 44 5/8" wide, will get a B&C gross score next week, it won't net score very good because of deductions. The score guess from others was about 160 gross. The horns and cape are at the taxidermist now. Biologist said "it was the biggest to come thru the check station this year". The bulls weight about 1100 to 1300 lbs. on the hoof. Velocity is 3050 fts @ 10 ft from my barrel. I love the Berger 168 hunting VLD's out of a 7 Mag. Thank you, Gunwerks, Berger, PT&G and Dave personally to make this gun happen. I got educated about the combo from GunWerks about four years ago. What is the 7mm LRM? What is the difference from the 7 Rem Mag?

Good deal! according to the guys at Gunweks the 7mm LRM will push the 180 VLD's around 3100 fps. I like the idea of a little more case capacity (80.8 vs 75.4 H20) in the LRM along with a non-belted case, longer neck and 30 deg shoulder. Very similar to the 6xc and 6.5-284 Norma but in the 7mag neighborhood. I want to shoot the 195 Hybrids one day and more powder in the case will help. I have all of the parts in except for the reamer and "go" gauge. Now after I loaded the dummy rounds the neck measured .318" but I think Aaron said that the neck on the reamer measures .321" for a .003" clearance. I have H1000 on hand but will experiment with Retumbo as well. I will post my test as I complete them. If the LRM will push 3100 fps with the 180 VLD's the 1000 yard velocity will be around 1840 fps and 1350 ft-lbs of energy. If it will push the 195 Hybrids 3100 fps, the 1000 yard velocity would be in the 2000 fps and 1785 ft-lbs neighborhood!!! All in a magizine fed long action Rem 700.
