7mm Rem Mag - Bullet Suggestions

I use my 7mm Rem Mag (Weatherby Vanguard) to hunt large game (elk and black bear), I am not a long range shooter, my longest distance shot/kill to date is just over 400 yards. Throwing a heavy bullet has made sense to my simple mind. My first rounds were Federal Fusion's 175grain, before they became hard to find. Dad made some loads for me: Nosler Accubond LR's 175 grain. Well, we are running out of those (only had a partial box to start with) and can't seem to find any more of them. If you have a lead on some, help would be appreciated. ;-)

I am new to reloading, for all intents Dad is as well. The primary question is fairly simple: What is a good replacement bullet for my purpose and rifle?

Layering in some facets:
- Availability: Bullets that I can find and buy a few hundred (or more) and have stores for a few years to come.
- Physics: Should I look into other grain weights? As stated earlier, my primary concern is knock down power on larger animals.
- Learning: What other factors should I consider in my search? Totally open to read links and learn from experiences of others.

Thanks in Advance.

I have a Winchester Classic Stainless 7mm RM, with a 26" barrel. I have used a variety of bullet weights but the most versatile and accurate have been Nosler 160gr partitions. Both in factory premium ammo and handloads. I will also say that in the past few years I have migrated to lighter mono metal bullets (Barnes TTSX, Hornady GMX). In fact, I killed a very large Shiras moose here in Idaho a few years ago using Hornday Superformance 139gr GMX bullets. Range was about 80 yards.

For just general shooting in this rifle, I also have had good accuracy with Sierra Gameking 160gr BTSP bullets. I would use them for deer and elk if I didn't have anything else handy. As always, shot placement is key.

Most of my reloads have used RL22 (140gr Nosler BT's) or RL25 (160gr whatevers).

Good all around cartridge when loaded with the appropriate bullet for the game. It's one of the most popular here in the US.

Woodleigh, often ignore by the US shooters unless they are loading to go to Africa... They make a terrific 175 gr. Protected Point bullet for the type of game you want to hunt.

Graf's has Prvi Partizan Spitzers in 174 gr:

MRP
Ramshot Magnum
Re-25

Both have worked in my rifles, running about 2900+ fps approximately in a 24" barrel.

FOR,. Larger Game at, "reasonable" distances my first choice would be, the 160 gr. Partition as,.
it will Kill,.. anything & EVERYTHING, in North America and,.. HAS !
I also liked, the 154 gr. Hornady InterBond @ 3,075 FPS for, longer distances, as accurate and produces, one heck of, a beautiful Mushroom, but was, a little "fussy" to get to shoot ( Found good accuracy at, .010 - .015 OFF ).
The 160 - 170 Speer's mentioned above by coyote fur, would DO the "Job" nicely, too !
As would, the "Heavier" Sierra,.. Game Kings.
My son likes, the 168 Berger HVLD's, in his 7mm-08 for, longer range ACCURACY and "Boiler Room" shots, on Elk.
There a many, "good", 7 MM Bullets ! The one's I've named, ARE "tough enough" for,.. Elk & Blackie's !
Good Luck with, finding,..YOUR,. choice !

I'm using a 150gr ABLR over RL26 in my Savage 111.
Black bear & whitetailled deer.
Where i hunt opportunity is there from contact to over 1,200 yards.
Not that i plan on shooting 1,200 yards.

Calm wind, i'm comfortable with that combo out to 800 yards.

As far as bullet weight I would go with a 160, but the right 150 or 175 would certainly do just fine. Hornady stuff here is pretty available locally, hopefully you can find something that will work, 162 interlocks or ssts should do just fine and are not that expensive if you can find them.
Set alerts on midway usa, keep an eye out on bluecollar reloading.com and shootersproshop.com

I suggest the Barnes lead-free TSX or TTSX, like a 150. I'm currently using the 140's in my 7mm Rem Mag though I'm after deer and pigs - not elk or moose - though it will cleanly take those. I'll likely switch to 120's when I expend my current bullets. The bullets tend to be much more readily available than leaded bullets when things can be hard to find. They have stellar performance and you can use a bullet a bit lighter than in the leaded option. The Hornady GMX are good - but I could never get them to shoot as well as the TSX's in any of my rifles (I also use the Barnes TTSX's in .257 Roberts, .22 Nosler, .243 Win., .375 H&H Mag)
