7mm mag speeds

Found me a barrel and I am thinking about a new project. I have spent the last few weeks putting together (the ultimate hunting rifle)- for me that is. and now that all the decisions have been made and the parts are ordered I am longing for another project. I have a 9 twist Broughton 1.25" straight barrel 30" in .284. My bench gun is 284win and I love it, so I was thinking of doing another gun but making it tactical 12-15lbs range. I want it to be really hard hitting but not too exotic with the caliber. With 29-30" of barrel what kinda speeds should I exspect with a good ole 7mm mag?? is it worth it to make it an STW or RUM??

#5 fluted, 27" brux with brake, cruising along very easily @ 3050 with 162 Amax... I listened to Russ... ;D

Laminate hunting stock, 6.5-20x40LR VXIII weighs in just over 11lbs. Bout max I want to carry now days..

IMHO, dont need a STW or RUM for 99% of my hunting applications.. I had a STW in the same weight class and it was a shooter too, kinda felt overgunned chasing deer with it..

My 7mm Rem Mag 24" is running 2970 fps with 160 Accubonds.
It will reach 3K but was more accurate at that speed.
My 7 STW with a 26" barrel pushes the 162 Amax at 3250 fps.

As far as the larger 7 mags go I would pass. While I have never owned a 7 RUM every gunsmith I have ever talked to (some of them very well respected names) have quit chambering for that cal. Too many accuracy problems and REALLY tough on barrels. Right now I'm pondering on a 7 Weatherby with a standard throat..........If I can find the reamer. Just my thoughts.
