7mm long range choices

I am looking to chamber a barrel in 284 and would like some input from the members on their thoughts.I am going to shoot 600 and 1000yds in a Bat action,Shehane MBR stock, Jewel trigger and NF NSX 12-42 x 56 scope. Right now I am thinking of 284 shehane, 280AI, or the 7 RSAUM. Any other chamberings I'd be happy to hear your ideas. Put it out there and I will read it all. Thanks

I'm looking at basically putting together the same thing as you down the road. From my research the 7MM RSAUM is hard to beat. Same performance as the WSM but with less powder, some say it is potentially more accurate than the WSM and possibly has better barrel life, all because of the longer neck. If you want good brass you make it from 300 RSAUM Norma.

One consideration is do you think you want to run .473" case head cartridges through that action some day down the line after this chambering? If so you might want to stick with the 284 or 284 Shehane.

Go with a straight 284 necking up Lapua 6.5-284 brass.

Friends of mine with straight 284's are getting 2000 rounds of competitive barrel life running 180 VLD's at 2850 fps.

Friends who are running the 7 RSAUM are replacing barrels at 700-800 rounds. The 7 WSM is no better on barrel life.

.284, .284 Improved (Shehane or other), 7 SAUM, 7 WSM. lots of choices. SAUM will be a good chioice if you want something that is readily magazine feedable, as the shoulder angle helps as compared with the 7 WSM.

I have and shoot .284 Improved (my own design) and 7WSM.

My first multiuse Tactical / F-Class 7WSM went 1,680 rounds before it died an ugly death in the middle of a relay. My brother is just over 1,500 rounds out of his straight .284 Winchester, again multi use including F-Class. My current dedicated 7WSM for F-Class has over 800 rounds through it and is going strong. The only thing impeeding great scores is the guy behind the trigger, not the barrel. I'll not mention manufacturer's names, but both of my 7WSM barrels - and their replacements - have been cut rifled barrels, as is my brother's .284 Winchester.

I would expect the SAUM to do around 1,200 - 1,500 rounds if it is dedicated to F-Class use. A 7WSM dedicated to F-CLass maybe 1,000 -1,200 rounds. The SAUM is more efficient and has the longer neck so it can stretch a touch further on the round count.

Accept the fact that F-Class is pretty brutal on barrels, as you are putting lots of rounds down range in a fairly limited timeframe. In my case, I run usually 24-25 rounds per relay and finish in roughly 18 minutes.

I am in the process of building a 7SAUM for long range shooting. After doing all the research I made this decision, bought all the components, and now,,,, am somewhat concerned about good brass. Can't find Norma brass anywhere. Hopefully the rumor is true; Norma will soon be marketing 7SAUM brass: No necking down!
My build components:
BAT HR action, RB/RP spiral flute, integral rail and lug (single shot)
BAT trigger guard
Bartlein SS 30" barrel, 1-9tw
PTG reamer Finisher .317nk .220fb
Vais muzzle brake
Jewell BR trigger
McMillan 5A stock
Custom stock paint by Madshadowcustompaint.com
Decelerator recoil pad
Graco recoil reducer
Nightforce 8-32x56 NSX scope NP-2DD reticle
Barrett BORS ranging system

Scotsman Grant Taylor has just won the F-Class European Championship at Bisley and is the 2010/11 GB F-Class champion for the second successive year shooting a .284 Shehane against the many 7mmWSM users we have here. He gets superb accuracy and very much better barrel life than the short magnums keeping MVs down a little. So the Shehane cuts the mustard OK, not to mention Grant's skills as a long-range shooter.

I've had a look at the cartridge and was tempted. Having to have custom dies made put me off rather, so I think I'd go with the 'straight' version of the cartridge in preference.
