7mm Dasher???

I shot a 7mm BR successfully in IHMSA Unlimited competition, as many other folks did.....Anybody ever try a 7MM Dasher for 600 and 1000 yards?......I realize that bullet choice may be the problem.....Any opinions would be helpful.....Thanks, Steve

Would the Dasher case have a long enough neck to hold the 7mm bullets well? Flat base bullets shouldn't be a problem, but I don't see the point. The Dasher is designed for longer range, so if you made it a 7mm you would want to use high BC boat tail bullets which I don't think would fit the case very well.

The limiting factor would be case capacity. Dasher is a nearly ideal case for 6mm at reasonable velocities. For a 7mm to be competitive at 600 to 1000 yards you will need at least 40 grains of a moderately slow powder and Dasher cases cannot do it.

If a 7 BR works, why wouldn't a 7 Dasher? If you have a neck, you can hold the bullet in place.

It would be interesting to know if anyone tried one for the groundhog shoots (out to 500 yards) where its important to see bullet holes. If the accuracy is there it could be a great round for the groundhog matches, but it may not have enough velocity for 1000 yards. If anyone has tried a 7mm dasher in the groundhog matches I would like to know about there results or how they shoot out to 500 or 600 yards.

Steve hit the nail on the head.

In the 600-1000 yard game the 7 dasher wouldn't have enough speed with a big enough bullet to out do the 6 dasher. In my shooting the .284 with 180's and the 6 dasher are VERY CLOSE in the 1000 yard game.

I believe Steve is probably right.....In 1996 I shot a Sierra 150 BTSP with 30 grs. of 748 for 2026 fps in a XP 100 14".....Deadly on the rams.....I have always wanted to try a 7 Dasher with my Panda and a 30" Bartlein, but I agree that case capacity would not give me any advantage over my 6 Dasher.....Thanks all......Steve

If you find a 7 Dasher interesting, I suggest also thinking about necking up the 6.5x47 Lapua.

This is a far more viable suggestion. The case is strong, has a small primer and flash hole and good quality brass is readily available. I did some quick calcs and ran the numbers in QuickLOAD. The results are attached.

Another of Mr Ezell's good ideas.

I may explore it if I continue to shoot local VHA-type matches. I really like my 284 Shehane, but it is a bit overkill for the application.

OTOH, I've thought a lot about a 30x47 Lapua. The larger holes are an advantage as rules and conditions make it hard to see the bullet holes
