7MM Cartridge selection

Hammer47

I suffer fools poorly.
What do you reckon for the "ideal" 7mm cartridge to be used with heavy BT bullets at ranges from 600 to 1000 yds? I have the shorter range stuff handled and now have a 7STW that frankly is just too much gun recoil wise. The reason that I need to stay with the 7mm is that the STW bbl is a VERY low miled Krieger and I have a gang of 7mm heavy BT's, so a setback and rechamber is in the works. What will do the job with a minimum of powder [erosion] and recoil and be effective in the breeze at 1K? Prolly a loaded question but can you think of a sharp shouldered, easily formed case that would be "the right one"? Regards...g

If you want to keep the same bolt face a 7mm RSAUM would fill the bill as would a 25 WSSM necked up to 7mm, personally I would go with a 40 degree shoulder if I went with the WSSM.
If you don't mind changing the bolt a 284 Win would work.
I reread your post and I think the 7mm RSAUM is the ideal 1000yd cartridge that is why I am currently building a 1000yd light gun for that ctg.

James... I feel so stupid that I forgot to mention that the brass has been turned to fit the .473 boltface, so the equasion is different. This was my gunsmith's rifle and he did not want to alter the blotface on this benchrest action. 284 may be the answer but does it not have a mild shoulder? Regards...g

I'm not sure what you mean by a mild shoulder it has a 35 degree shoulder which I wouldn't consider mild if that helps any.

You might give a thought to the .280 AI. I understand that there is factory brass available for it from Nosler.

Just a thought.

Teach me to trust to memory, thought it was a 30 degree shoulder. That should be enough to prevent excess brass stretch. I guess it is a waste of time looking for the "quick fix" but I would like to find the most efficient case. Makes no sense to burn more powder than necessary and get more erosion. Prolly should just shoot a 7/08 and get 3000 rds per bbl. Regards...g
