7mm bullet for pig at mid range

Have you a good bullet that will kill well at around 600yd and not flop at under 100yd.
284 win cal, on target of course!!!

I use 162gr A-MAX for my 284 WIN BR/F Class gun with supurb accuracy.

I also used 162gr A-MAX in my 7X57 hunting rifle and dispatched a black tail deer and a small pig within 30 Min. For small black tail deer and pigs as small as mine was, the A-MAX
actually expands too fast and made a big exit hole. I think white tail and Mulies as well as big pigs would be just fine!
The speed of the A-MAX in my 7X57 is about 2650fps and is accurate to beyond 300yd.

I'd be more worried about close range blow-ups if you were shooting a RUM at 300 or more fps faster. With the .284 I think the 150 Sierra SBT might do pretty well. I would definitely stick with a cup and core bullet rather than anything tougher.

I like to use Bonded core bullets eg. Swift A-Frames , Woodliegh Weld-Core, Speer Trophy Bonded Bear Claws or the newer Horn. InterBond , Scir II's. The frontal jackets are thin enough to expand well over a wide velocity and the bonding holds it all together without separation. You won't have any "broken petals" or "pencil throughs".

The 154g Hornady SP is a tried and true bullet for hogs, 300 lb hogs bullet will go through both shoulers at 50 yards, never a blow up. We have taken many elk with this bullet also along with hundreds of deer. Hard to believe just how accurate this old timmey bullet is. I would say that the 154g Hornady will do it all, deer, hogs, and elk.

I have a buddy that has taken every pig he's hit in south Texas with a 162A-max. Longest shot was 172yds, shortest was 50. Bullet is running around 2600 with I4895, RL15 or Varget. 39gr of either.

I've had real good performance from the Sierra 7mm 150 prohunter or Game King out of my 7x57. Large or small deer and hogs it is an excellent bullet. I've taken 25 or 30 animals with it, never let me down, accurate also.
PS. My loads are max. way over the mundane recommendations in loading manuals.

If your choosy with shot placement at short ranges the 162gr Amax would be the ticket. It is a very expansive bullet at close range but superb at longer ranges - real hammer of thor material. If your likely to have rushed shot's at close range I wouldn't use an Amax - look no further than the 154gr SST. It holds together better at close range & still expand well at long range. While the BC it flash they are still a great all rounder choice.

162g SST is a WHOLE LOT TOUGHER than an A max!!! 162g Hornady BTSp is TOUGH-rated elk bullet, so is the 154g Hornady sp.

Barnes TSX, or TTSX.
+1
Barnes any caliber. Shot placement . Hogs its all about shot placement. My grand daughter killed a 270 lb with one shot from a 223 with barnes. Her dad shot one with a 375 HH and we had to blood trail it 200YDS. We even lost one 150 class with a 45-70. Bone your friend when shooting hogs. Larry

I have shot many, many hogs here in Texas, up to the 300 pound range. I believe in shooting THROUGH the shoulder "plate / knuckle bone of the shoulder" of a pig. They can absorb a lot of punishment, however, very, very few can absorb a well placed shoulder shot that hits and breaks heavy bone. For a job like that, the "Bonded Core / Triple Shock" variety of bullets has never failed me. I am one that prefers COMPLETE BLOW THRU with an excellent blood trail, should you need it.

To be specific, the Barnes TSX family, the Hornady INTERBOND (not Interlock) and the Nosler Accubond are the best, especially when the pigs get big. I have seen a wild pig once that was so big he looked like something other than a pig. I saw him for a few seconds and he disappeared in the brush. After seeing him, I would not have wanted to try him out with anything less than a 30 cal magnum with Barnes TSX's.. He was huge. Sans anything like that, the aforementioned bullets will always get the job done with a well placed shoulder shot. They usually collapse on the spot.

When I was mowing pastures I shot 150 plus a year. I used a 22.250 with v max. Tried to gut shoot every one so I didn't have to drag them off the field. If you want to recover them Break bone. Larry
