7mm/300SAUM by Warner tool.

Just want to give an atta boy to the Warners. I am new to the whole long range/target/comp shooting. I did want to start out with a rifle that I know will outshoot me. My only problem now is load development. With the 180 VLDs it was made for, I can't find a powder/load configuration that is more accurate than any other at 300 yards. Any recomendations or pet loads? I think I am going to stick with H4831sc for powder, but how much?

Don't burn the barrel out prematurely-
Hodgdon powders wouldn't be my first choice.

A chronograph will take the guess work out of the equation!!

Try 58gr of the 4831sc. that should put you right near the 2900fps mark.
When I get my 7SAUM I am going to try the 180 VLD with 61gr of RL25 to start. Looks like that should give approx 2950fps for a starting load.
I came by these numbers in my research when deciding to build the SAUM and then running them through QuickLoad. The RL25 load came out best.

With the new Berger 180 gr. Hybrid bullet, it makes no sense to use the Berger 180 gr. VLD. The Hybrid bullet has a higher B.C. than the VLD and it is less finicky - no benefit to running the VLD at this point.

I am not sure if you are referring to the 7mm/300WSM Warner has been doing or are you referring to the 7mm RSAUM or something else?

With the 7mm RSAUM, I found that 58.5 gr. of H4831SC ran dead on at 2900 fps with an E.S. of 14 and an S.D. of 7 with the 180's. The load I found most accurate was around 58 gr. of H4831SC ran at 2842 fps with the 180's.

With the 7mm/300WSM, 64.5 gr of H4831SC put me at 2975 fps with the 180's with an E.S. of 15 and an S.D. of 6, and 65.5 gr. put me at 3017 fps with an E.S. of 15 and an S.D. of 5.

What cartridge do you have?

The only other powder of much use is RL-17....... especially if H-4831 SC isnt cutting it..

Robert,
Thanks for the heads-up on the 180gr Hybrid. I am going to buy some of those and give them a try. I also have some RL17 that PREACHER mentioned so I should be good to go when the 7SAUM gets here.
Thanks again.
Barry

I still think it is possible there may be a typo in the initial posting on this thread when the guy called it the "7mm/300SAUM" and since there is a big difference between the 7mm RSAUM and Warner's 7mm/300WSM, I would be careful of whatever advice we give to the initial poster.

I am working up loads right now in a 7WSM (I wish it were a 7mmX300 WSM though). I have had best luck with Ramshot Magnum- I am getting 2975 with 180 Bergers in 26" barrel with ES under 20. My second choice is R17 but it may or may not work. I don't think there is anything wrong with H4831sc either. If this is the smaller capacity SAUM then I don't know if the powder choices I am using would apply.

Using the data provided on the home page for the 7mm SAUM, I have had good results with 4831sc. I would recommend starting low and working up gradually. I found best results at 2890 fps with 180 VLD's.

I shot a ladder test with them on Thursday and got a 4-shot cluster about 1 1/2" at 500 yds at between 2830 and 2930. Will exploit this further... I know they will shoot at this velocity.

I have had good results from MRP, RL-22, and IMR7828SSC with the 180 VLDs in a 7mm/300RSAUM. Danny Biggs recently set the F_open National record for 20@1000 yards at the Berger SW Nationals with H4350 and the 180 Hybrids. There is a video interview with Danny on the Home Page about that.

Thanks for the info guys. It is indeed a 7/300 SAUM. Dan is right, a chrony is next on the bill. So I can just look at es and sd. The 180gr hybrids are definitely worth checking out.

Maybe there's something I am not understanding here, but the 7mm SAUM (a.k.a. the 7mm RSAUM) is the official 7mm cartridge based off Remington's Short Action Magnum series of cartridges (that includes the 300 SAUM) and as far as I know they all have the same head space, so I am thinking the 7mm/300SAUM is really a misnomer (i.e. maybe drawn up by Warner Tool as a wildcat right when the 300 SAUM first came out before the 7mm version was officially released). It seems to me the 7mm SAUM (a.k.a. the 7mm RSAUM) and the 7mm/300 SAUM are one in the same?

Anyone have and info on that?

Robert Whitley

Robert. I interpret 7mm/300SAUM to mean a 7mmSAUM formed by necking down 300 SAUM brass. If you want to use Norma brass, you have to neck down 300 SAUM brass since Norma doesn't offer 7mm RSAUM brass. The results are not identical to say a Remington 7mmSAUM case. The neck with the 7mm/300RSAUM is shorter so the reamer may be ground differently. There have been rumors that Norma plans to offer 7mmRSAUM brass but I haven't seen anything specific yet.

I neck down .300 SAUM brass and use it in an extremely tight 7mm SAUM chamber. Velocities compared to remmy 7mm brass are very close.

try some h1000 in your 7SAUM. 67gr gives 3100fps but i dropped it back to 65.5 for 3000fps 9fps ES and 4fps SD for 10 shots and i get 8-10 firings out of rem brass.

wouldnt re17 be too fast? i didnt have any luck with 4831sc i just couldnt get over 2950fps without pressure and huge ES.

did Danny Biggs give a charge weight that he was using with h4350?

He did but you should listen to the interview. It takes a lot less H4350 in a case that size than say IMR7828SSC so be careful with your starting loads. It takes 56 grains of IMR7828SSC to get the same velocity as 51.5 grains of H4350 in my Shehane. I believe that he uses a Barnard action which might also make a difference.

I shoot a 300-7mmSAUM but tell people it is a 7mmSAUM to avoid explaining the difference. Max case length on my cartridge is 2.015 so it isn't safe to shoot factory 7mmSAUM loads in but there is little difference in performance between it and a legit 7mmSAUM. Since the lead on my cartridge is approx. .08" longer than SAAMI that will have more effect on the difference than the brass length difference.

Out of 4 guns chambered for the round I have had one rifle that shot 162 A-max bullets well with either H-4831 or H-1000 the rest have liked H-1000 for both 162 A-maxes and 180 VLD Bergers.
At 1000 yards I find no difference between the 2 bullets, only differences in accuracy of different bullet lots.
I use only Nosler 300SAUM brass. BR2 Primers.

hi tony! yeah id be very interested in seein that interview because i e mailed the moderator requesting an interview or article with jerry tierey or danny biggs about the 7SAUM a couple of months ago! i cant find the interview anywhere on the main page and i even searched youtube for it aswell :( where is it hiding??

Not a problem. I couldn't find it either at first. It is buried in Bryan Litz's video report on the Berger 2011 Long Range Southwest Nationals in the Daily Bulliten on or about Feb 5, 2011. This link works right now but the page number may change as they add material.

The whole video is very interesting.
