7mm/.284 Win Rifle build

Hello everybody. I just started another rifle build this time from the ground up. Action will be a Defiance Deviant, barrel is a Brux 1-9, trigger by Jewell, scope by Schmidt Bender and gunstock is a custom build by me in aluminum and carbon fiber. I'm a machinist by trade and I been building it when I get free time from my main job (Field Service Machinist for Siemens Energy).

Then the machining begins. After measuring the action I determine the measurements I'll be using to place the action in the material. You might ask why aluminum and I will tell you stiffness and vibration dampening.

Then is up to the barrel threading, bolt bore clearance and chambering (still waiting on the free float reamer to finish it).

This morning I managed to cut the octagon for the handguard and was able to fit it before leaving for work in TX. Had to hand file the corners and fit it by hand since the inside surface is not uniform. Tedious but it will make a nice, light handguard. Took my time to achieve a slop free, tight fit. And that's where I'm sitting right now. Once I get back I'll finish the barrel chambering, start working in the trigger guard and finish the stock area.

Nice work. Any reason you leave so much of the barrel hanging out the chuck?

Nothing special. I tried indicating it closer to the chuck but it wasn't working for me. So I extended around 4" from the chuck. (I think picture angle is deceiving). Entire barrel is 33" long. I thought about maybe having vibration issues or chatter but since I can lower the speed as much as I can electronically (VFD control in lathe). It shouldn't (knock on wood) be an issue. So far no vibration issues.

Here's a couple pictures of my Remi 700 (.308) that way you can see how it will start looking in a few weeks. Only change will be the back portion since the new one will have more adjustability.

Happy Thanksgiving. I was able to get home for a few days and got back into Dexter's Laboratory mode right away. Was able to do the magazine well, the trigger well, and some other stuff. Starting to look like a rifle now.

Tito, I assume that the pistol grip that you have in the picture will be replaced with a custom grip of some sort? Otherwise, you are on track to making a fine stick.

Got the chambering done. No chattering and no bigger issues. Now I'm getting some aluminum and starting the trigger guard, hinge, back portion of it and the barrel profile. Now that I'm almost on vacations it will be a matter of days! ;-)

Decided to lighten it up a bit and put a cover plate. Still deciding if I'll leave it screwless, glue it with Hysol (high strength epoxy) or just small flat head screws. What do you guys think?
