7mm 180g Scenar-L

I have 1000 of the Lapua 180g Scenars that I would like to shoot this year for my season in my .284 Win. My barrel has significant enough throat to shoot these bullets. I am trying to shorten my learning curve and I believe some of you are shooting these bullets in your .284 Win or improved versions. Could you give me a heads up on your best seating depth? In the past, I have always found jam(not touching) then proceeded out of jam by 3 thous at a time to see what a bullet likes. Others, use a tool to find touch, then work out from that, so it is hard to discern which when people describe their OAL to ogive length. Therefore, with that premise out of the way, how have you found your preference for loading of the 180 Scenars and what was that preference in regards to above?

I have heard repeatedly that this bullet is very forgiving for seating regards to distance to/from lands, so I am hoping that will be the case.

Lastly, I noticed that the meplat was fairly big on this bullet. I have a Whidden pointing die and was wondering if you guys have experience pointing this bullet and if so, which insert do you believe works the best?

Thanks in advance.

I have shot them in 2 Shehanes I had in the past. One of those liked them right at 3K OFF the lands and the other was 15K off the lands. They have a VERY LONG bearing surface and my opinion are better suited for slower powders. I would try H4831SC and or IMR 7828SSC.. I have tried them IN the lands and they shot like a blunderbuss in all rifles.. I never pointed them because you are really looking for "consistency" and they have very pretty meplats.. I would not disturb those bullets..

Good to hear from you KY. The calibers that I shot them in liked a little jump from 5 off to 30 thou.Looking forward to seeing you on the line this year!

I point them with the Benchsource die using the #1 insert. I don't know how that compares to the Whidden. but it matches up with the pointing of the factory pointed Sierras. I have best results jumping them .010.
