7mm 162gr A-Max twist rate help

The side of the box for the A-Max says a 1x8 twist is needed. A Berger 168gr VLD says it requires a 1x10 twist, so why does the lighter A-Max require a faster twist???

I've got a 1x9 twist 7mm-08 that I wanted to single feed with the A-Max. Anybody have any real world experience as to what twist rate is really needed for the A-Max or what RPM we're trying to achieve?

Tks,
Bill

It has to do with the length of the bullet. I have a 7 Mouse that shoots 163 Sierra Match real well from an 8.5 twist. If you're target shooting, faster twist is going to be better. If just for hunting, load some up and try them in the 9 twist you may be surprised; especially if you don't push them too fast.

I have a Sendero that shoots them very good it has a twist 1 -9 1/4 . I am shooting them at 3011 fps . It will shoot them better than the bergers in my gun. I would try some .

I shoot a 7-08 w/a brux 9 twist that is set up just for the 162 a-max. Have shot out to 1,000 yds. in competition and have had no problems. My load is running at 2750fps. My .284 win. also uses a brux 9 twist. You should be fine. Try IMR 4007 or RL-17 these powders work best for me.

Thanks for the help. Uncleduke, I've got some RL-17 on hand. How many grains are you using in your 7mm-08 w/ RL-17?

i have a remington factory barrel that shoots them really good. Killed 3 antelope and a whitetail buck with them.

I hesitate to offer my load only because every chamber is different. But I'm using rem brass and br2 primers. 44grains should be a safe starting point. My chamber is long so that the boatail junction is just above the shoulder of the brass. Br2 primers can handle more pressure than some others so be aware. I have also used necked down .308 Lapua brass but the case capacity is less. My rem brass is sorted and turned; more work but it's as accurate as the lapua. I only expect 4-5 loads before primer pockets start to loosen up. Proceed with caution.

Uncleduke,

I understand the hesitation, and I assure you I will reduce by 15% and proceed with caution. I'm using Norma brass, and BR2 primers, but it sounds like you are throated a little longer than me. I have a McGowen custom barrel cut w/ a PTG reamer. I would have to seat at about 2.95 to touch the lands, so this puts the bearing surface a smidge below the shoulder/neck junction. I just got the RL-17, and load data for it is a little hard to come by with the 162gr for a 7mm-08. Alliant's website says 44gr for a Speer 160 gr BTSP, so I figured a little less for the 162gr. Just looking for some real world numbers.

Tks,
Bill

The 162gr A-Max shoots very accurately from my 7STW which has a slower twist than normal, 1-10 twist. I can't imagine any .284 cartridge that would require an 8 twist for the 162gr A-Max.

I switched to 162 amax after( ringing rams with 150, hitting them but not knocking them over) Rams are at 500 meters 547yrds. My barrel is a shilen select match 1-9 twist. Have not had a problem since switching to the amax. Acurrate and hard hitting. This also is a 7-08.

I shoot the 162 A max in my 7STW. They are the best shooting bullet I have shot out of it. 72 gr. reloader 22. Federal gold match 215 primers. Nosler brass.

I was shooting them in my 7-08 with a stout charge of H-4350 from a 1-10" PacNor 23" barrel
and was getting 2800 fps and good accuracy.

Good Luck,
Joe
